Job description

The
mission
of The New York Times is to seek the truth and help people understand the world. That means independent journalism is at the heart of all we do as a company. It’s why we have a world-renowned newsroom that sends journalists to report on the ground from nearly 160 countries. It’s why we focus deeply on how our readers will experience our journalism, from print to audio to a world-class digital and app destination. And it’s why our business strategy centers on making journalism so good that it’s worth paying for.

Job Description

The newsroom is hiring an Associate Manager of Masthead Operations who will report to the Director of Masthead Operations, and work with her to make sure the newsroom’s leadership team has the structure and support it needs to move forward on newsroom priorities in addition to overseeing the daily news report.
No two days in this job are alike, but every day will involve working across multiple timelines, managing operations across multiple initiatives and coordinating across the newsroom and the wider company to keep projects moving forward. And you’ll do this all with the utmost discretion, knowing that you’re working with often sensitive materials.
In this role, you will be at the intersection of newsroom operations, culture, communications and coverage. This role for someone who loves The Times and its mission, excels at creating structure and is energized by working with many different people in many different configurations. You’ll be a member of the Newsroom Strategy team and will get the chance to work closely with a wide range of teams and leaders, including the masthead, the invaluable assistants for the masthead, Culture & Careers, HR, Legal, department heads and deputies across the newsroom, internal and external communications, and the offices of the Publisher and CEO.
This job is based at our New York City headquarters and requires regular in-office attendance (usually 3-4 days in the office, ultimately dependent on the schedule for any given week).
Responsibilities:
  • Work with Director of Masthead Operations on the project management of the masthead’s priorities
  • Support recurring operations including the daily news meetings; agendas for regular leadership meetings; and the annual priority and budget planning process
  • Maintain visibility into internal and external events that require masthead involvement, and support the planning and execution of such events.
  • Partner with Culture & Careers, Internal Communications and other departments around the newsroom and company on strategic plans and implementation that involve the masthead
  • Schedule duty editors for newsroom holidays; coordinate with executive assistants on masthead scheduling
  • Support as needed the Director of Masthead Operations and newsroom leaders on a range of other tasks and issues as they arise, including drafting communications
  • Independently identify opportunities and recommend practical approaches and solutions to address them
Basic Qualifications:
  • Minimum 3 years experience with managing projects or in an operational or strategic role
  • At least one year working in an editorial environment
  • At least one year of experience working in a role that requires a high level of discretion
  • Experience drafting communications, including messaging intended for executive level and/or wide audiences
  • Experience distilling information and communicating recommendations and findings to senior company leadership in writing (e.g., memos, slide presentations) and verbally.
  • Able to work independently and quickly
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Love operational and workflow puzzles and are skilled at solving them
  • Able to accomplish your goals with determination and creativity
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced and collaborative environment
  • Able to communicate effectively
  • Detail-oriented and organized
  • Committed to The New York Times’ mission and values, and dedicated to being a part of our innovation and growth
The annual base pay salary for this role is between $81,000.00 and $97,000.00.
