Overview: Reporting to the General Counsel, the Associate General Counsel will Support the engineering department in a variety of construction projects. This attorney will also play an important role in supporting senior members of the legal team.

Experience: Minimum of 7 years of experience with a large national law firm, with a focus on engineering and construction agreements. Experience representing clients in construction, transportation, or other highly regulated industries as well as experience in regulatory matters is preferred.

Location: Mt. Laurel, NJ.

Compensation:Competitive base salary and bonus commensurate with experience. Excellent health benefits, pension and 401K.

Relocation:Yes, but local candidates preferred.

Position Information

Reporting to the General Counsel, the Associate General Counsel will support the engineering department. This attorney will also play an important role supporting senior members of the legal team.

Job Duties

  • Draft and negotiate construction-related agreements.
  • Provide advice and counsel regarding environmental compliance and risk mitigation.
  • Manage and advise on regulatory compliance programs.
  • Draft and review initial documentation, obtain approvals, modify documents, and coordinate document execution.
  • Assist senior level attorneys, paralegals, and staff members, with the review and preparation of documents, reports, and correspondence.
  • Manage outside counsel to meet deadlines and achieve objectives while remaining within budget.
  • State and federal grant writing and grant assurance.

 

Qualifications & Skills

  • Juris Doctor from accredited law school with license to practice as an attorney under the laws of New Jersey and/or Pennsylvania or licensed in any other state with the ability to obtain a limited in-house license to practice in New Jersey and/or Pennsylvania.
  • Minimum 7 years of relevant work experience at a national law firm
  • Experience with regulatory matters.
  • Project management experience
  • Excellent communication, analytical, problem-solving, and negotiation skills.
  • Ability to handle quick turnarounds and work effectively with diverse in-house clients.
  • Ability and desire to quickly learn the fundamentals of different areas of the law.
  • Superior written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Must be a flexible and strategic thinker in a fast-paced environment.
  • Must possess excellent organizational skills and be able to handle multiple tasks and prioritize projects while managing competing priorities.
  • Ability to present facts, issues, analysis, conclusions, and recommendations or solutions that demonstrate command of content. Must be comfortable presenting information and analysis in a group setting.
  • Ability to handle confidential and non-routine information.
  • Ability to lead and/or participate in a team of legal professionals who collaborate, set, and achieve goals and report on progress through measurable metrics.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver advice in the context of business objectives and with a commercial mindset, to identify and appreciate the significance of legal issues, to recognize legal and reputational risk, and to develop cost effective legal and business resolutions.

Litigation experience is a plus.

As a terminal and switching service provider for its owners, CSX Transportation and Norfolk Southern, Conrail continues to provide safe and efficient rail service for many local rail freight customers in Detroit, New Jersey and Philadelphia. Customers located along Conrail’s lines in these shared asset areas have access to the nation’s rail network through either NS or CSX.
Although Conrail no longer handles commercial matters for customers, we continue to play a critical role in serving shippers and receivers as an agent for our owners. As a local rail service provider, it is Conrail’s job to make sure that customers’ freight shipments are safely and efficiently moved between their rail sidings and the long distance freight trains operated by CSX and Norfolk Southern.
