Reporting to the Senior Manager of Communications and also working closely with the Senior Manager of Public Relations and Content Marketing, a term Associate Editor would support communications efforts and strengthen the Museum’s omni-channel initiatives, with the aim of increasing member and donor engagement as well as fundraising efforts. This role will not only enhance the MFA’s online presence, but also create a warm invitation for all audiences and encourage deeper engagement with the Museum and our collection. Central to this role is the development of content that deepens members’ emotional connection to the MFA and reinforces the value of membership. This is a three-year term position.

Essential Functions:

  • Responsible for crafting, conceptualizing, developing, and publishing content for web, social media, MFA Mobile, direct mail and email related to fundraising efforts, including member communications and development communications
  • Aggregate content for monthly email newsletter to promote member engagement and fundraising?
  • Work as needed with Senior Writer of Campaign Communications and Digital Content on developing fundraising materials for print, web and email
  • Manage content development and editorial oversight for fundraising communications and special projects related to the MFA Fund, Annual Programs, Planned Giving, and the upcoming public Campaign
  • Coordinate with Development Operations and Gifts of Art teams to gather and review annual donor lists and top acquisitions for projects such as the Annual Report
  • Work with social media team to create posts that highlight designated projects and areas, e.g. Learning and Community Engagement, with the goal of raising awareness of brand "proof points" and raising profile of areas with fundraising needs
  • Work with curators, conservators and other content specialists on editing scripts for multimedia content related to member communications, under the supervision of the Sr. Manager of Communications
  • In coordination with the membership team, project manage member videos and virtual member lectures for web, including coordinating with video and database marketing teams, editing sponsor cards and beyond
  • Work with Membership team to oversee consultants that develop content for fundraising efforts, including attending weekly meetings
  • Coordinate Member and Fundraising email campaigns with Database Marketing and web team by attending regular meetings
  • Assume editorial oversight of Membership and Annual Programs renewal and acquisition campaign communications

Qualification Requirements and Characteristics

  • 3-5 years experience in a Communications role
  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, English, Public Relations or related field preferred
  • Strong writing and editing skills
  • Demonstrated experience in project management, including collaboration with a variety of internal and external stakeholders
  • Familiarity with content management systems, project management, and collaboration tools
  • Experience managing complex projects, including creating and maintaining production schedules, tracking progress, managing internal approvals.
  • Ability to multitask and work under deadline
  • Exceptional organizational skills
  • Experience at a nonprofit organization preferred
  • Ability to work both independently and as a member of a team in a fast-paced environment


Salary Range

Three-year term position

Full-time, 35 hours per week

Salary: $55,000 - $65,000

This position is affiliated with the UAW union
