Job Summary:

The Associate Director of Membership and Volunteer Engagement oversees and directs broad-based planning, design, management and assessment of Membership classes, member supports, and volunteer engagement to advance the mission, vision, goals and objectives of The Riverside Church. As a connector for guidance and support, the Associate Director works closely with the Minister for Care and Older Adults and lay leaders, and as needed, with other senior staff and clergy to facilitate and enhance programs, projects, and events designed to meet the church’s membership and volunteer-service goals. Further, the Associate Director develops and oversees initiatives to orient new members to the church, promote new-member satisfaction and retention through special fellowship opportunities, and ensure that all members understand the benefits and responsibilities of Membership.

The Associate Director also co-manages MCPL administrative support staff, under the supervision of the Minister for Care and Older Adults, for duties related to Membership and Volunteer Engagement.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

Membership Orientation / New-Member Engagement

  • Lead the design and management of quarterly in-person and virtual Membership Class cycles to educate and guide the discernment of prospective members, in collaboration with lay leaders and senior staff and in accordance with the Bylaws
  • Oversee the production of quarterly Joining Sundays in collaboration with lay leaders and senior staff
  • Develop and implement inclusive virtual-learning strategies with Tech Services and Operations
  • Develop and implement systems and tools to facilitate service- and fellowship-centered relationship-building between new members and ministries based on ministry needs and new members’ interests, knowledge, and skills
  • Develop and facilitate a tiered system of member-retention-focused support and engagement for new members in their first year of Membership
  • Develop and manage tools and systems for the collection and analysis of new-member data (e.g., goals and interests; special skills or talents; feedback on Membership Class and new-member fellowship initiatives)
  • Design processes and tools for collecting and analyzing input from lay leaders and clergy to guide the continuous improvement of new-member supports
  • Work closely with Communications to develop and implement strategies for promoting membership

Member Services

  • Lead the ongoing development and publication of the Riverside Membership Guidebook in collaboration with lay leaders, senior staff, and Communications
  • Work closely with the Secretary of the Church Council to maintain an official membership roll of the Church in accordance with the Bylaws
  • Refer members in need of pastoral care to the Minister of Care and Older Adults; facilitate other referrals (e.g. Social Services) as needed
  • Research membership policies and practices of comparable faith-based institutions and implement best practices to continually strengthen Riverside’s member services

Volunteer Engagement (Church Wide)

  • Lead the development of volunteer-service goals; develop and manage systems to track progress
  • Develop and manage a member-to-ministry volunteer referral system based on ministries’ periodic identification of priorities and projects
  • Oversee the development of Riverside materials and trainings to support the institution-wide implementation of volunteer-management approaches aligned with Church policies and practices, in collaboration with Human Resources
  • Facilitate broad-based orientations for new volunteers, and volunteer-management trainings and ministry-specific consultations for senior staff and lay leaders as needed

General

  • Commission: Serve as a staff liaison to the MCPL Commission regarding membership and volunteer engagement
  • Budget & Finance:Work with the Minister for Care and Older Adults to prepare and monitor the budget for new-member services and volunteer engagement; review expenses and performance to ensure alignment with mission and vision.
  • Data Collection, Management & Reporting: Develop and continuously improve strategies and tools for collecting and analyzing member data (e.g., demographics; strengths, challenges, and opportunities) to inform decision-making by senior staff and lay leaders. Manage related Raiser’s Edge updates and modifications in collaboration with the Director of Stewardship & Development

Experience and Education Requirements:

  • Master’s degree preferred
  • 5-7 years’ experience in senior leadership roles in the nonprofit sector desired
  • Strong organizational skills with outstanding detail orientation
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize multiple tasks to meet deadlines
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to effectively communicate ideas and persuade others to accomplish challenging goals and objectives
  • Demonstrated ability to interact in a collaborative manner with other ministries and teams
  • Demonstrated ability to work with discretion within a confidential environment
  • Working knowledge of Raiser’s Edge
  • Proficient in Microsoft suite of products including Word, Excel, Power Point
  • A working knowledge of The Riverside Church preferred
  • Advanced Spanish-language skills preferred
