Description:

The Boston University (BU) LGBTQIA+ Center for Faculty & Staff (the Center) seeks an Associate Director, a new position in the first center solely focused on LGBTQIA+ faculty and staff recruitment, retention, professional development, and belonging. The Center is housed under the Associate Provost for Community & Inclusion within the Office of the Provost. Reporting to the Director of the Center, the Associate Director works to advance the LGBTQIA+ Center initiative in service of the BU 2030 Strategic Priorities of Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion. The Associate Director will play an important role in designing and facilitating customized LGBTQIA+ training FOR FACULTY and staff and launching the BU Enacting Allyship training program. This role also supports recruitment and retention efforts through faculty engagement initiatives, including showcasing faculty research and scholarship, developing interdisciplinary faculty collaborations and research symposia, and creating educational workshops and resources (i.e., on topics such as inclusive pedagogy and promising practices for the classroom and research) in collaboration with key partners and stakeholders. In collaboration with the Director, the Associate Director assists with Center consultation and policy work and provides leadership for programmatic and strategic initiatives.

Ideal candidates have:

  • Previous professional experience with diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives and an intersectional approach to LGBTQIA+ community work;
  • Professional experience with developing and leading customized training on a wide array of LGBTQIA+ topics in a higher education setting;
  • Professional experience with consultation, policy development, and/or assessment of LGBTQIA+ services in higher education; and
  • Experience with faculty engagement.

Responsibilities:

  • Design and facilitate customized training FOR FACULTY and staff on a wide array of LGBTQIA+ topics; oversee the Enacting Allyship training program; and collaboratively provide vision and direction for the Center’s overarching programmatic strategy (45%)
  • Assist with LGBTQIA+ consultation, policy, and strategic initiatives and provide leadership as a deputy director (15%)
  • Lead faculty engagement initiatives that showcase BU faculty research and scholarship, create opportunities for interdisciplinary faculty collaborations and research symposia, and provide education and resources (30%)
  • Lead special projects that enhance the mission of the Center (10%)

Required Skills

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • 8-10 years of related professional experience in diversity, equity, and inclusion and/or working with LGBTQIA+ communities in higher education or a related field
  • Extensive knowledge about sexual orientation and gender identity and professional experience with addressing issues of concern related to LGBTQIA+ communities and our multiple intersecting identities
  • Experience with developing and leading customized training on a wide array of LGBTQIA+ topics
  • Experience working with both faculty and staff in a university setting and awareness of LGBTQIA+ higher education best practices
  • Demonstrated ability and strong interpersonal skills to work in a community and inclusion, social justice-oriented office with individuals and groups with a wide array of backgrounds, identities, life experiences and communication styles
  • Strong political acumen with the ability to work as a contributing member in a team-oriented environment with an understanding of the larger unit and university contexts
  • Ability to take initiative, problem solve, and work independently with good judgment about when to seek direction
  • Skill to juggle many different projects simultaneously, with consistent accuracy, follow-through, and timely completion of projects
  • Ability to recognize and protect confidential information and exercise tact, good judgment, and diplomacy in handling sensitive information and situations
  • Excellent communication skills to express ideas clearly and concisely both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to work some evenings and weekends for programming outside of regular business hours, which are Monday-Friday, 9 am-5 pm

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • A graduate-level terminal degree is preferred (e.g., Ph.D., J.D., M.D., Ed.D., M.F.A. or other terminal Master’s degree) with 5-8 years of progressive professional experience
  • Experience with providing guidance and consultation to colleagues around policy and practice in a higher education setting
  • Experience working with diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice education, including experience in the areas of race, ethnicity, nationality, class, disability, religion, sexuality, and gender
  • Experience with assessment of and/or research about LGBTQIA+ services in higher education
