SUMMARY OF DUTIES
Assists in defining and implementing Global Logistics strategies to enhance Merit's warehousing operations, supply chain and to reduce overall costs. Ensures compliance to all domestic and foreign laws, rules and regulations associated with shipping, including Dangerous Goods and International Trade Compliance. Oversees the day-to-day operations of the South Jordan, UT Shipping organization, or as otherwise assigned. Assists in the design, implementation and sourcing of transportation and warehousing capabilities at Merit distribution centers across the globe that will allow Merit Medical to meet the needs of internal stakeholders and external customers. Helps defining and driving performance against established KPI's and for assisting with distribution center automation technologies, international trade compliance, service provider selection and management, bid and contract negotiations with third-party service providers, and overall carrier performance.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS PERFORMED
1. Initially, this position will be directly responsible for overseeing the operation of the South Jordan distribution center and for establishing it as the "role model" that can be used as a pattern to guide the warehousing and shipping operations globally.
  • The ideal candidate will have extensive operational knowledge of warehouse operations and will work to establish and document a world-class operation to meet increasingly complex business needs.
  • To be successful with this aspect of the job descriptions, the candidate will need to have proven experience and success in: organizational design for success, managing a team of warehouse operators, designing and operating a warehouse, domestic parcel and freight shipping, international freight and parcel shipping, understanding of International Trade Compliance, inventory controls, shipping hazardous materials.
  • The ideal candidate will be charged with validating and/or refining the current warehouse operation and building an org structure that will lay the foundation for ongoing success.
  • The candidate will be accountable for the performance of all aspects of the South Jordan warehouse and Shipping and will be charged with refining and building a team of skilled workers who are highly effective, take pride in the quality of their work, work hard to get the job done, are motivated, who consistently produce high-quality output, and are customer focused

2. The ideal candidate will also bring expertise in helping design and oversee the construction of a new, to-be-constructed distribution center. Previous experience with warehouse design, technology options, and operational layout will be extremely beneficial and is strongly desired.
3.With the warehouse operation as the primary initial job function, it is contemplated that once the structure for a high-performing warehouse has been established that the candidate will use their expertise to help build a strong Logistics organization across the globe.
4. This will require a broad base of experience, technical knowledge, and management and leadership skills across several related areas, including the responsibilities for the following:
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other functions across the organization, including but not limited to Planning, Purchasing, Sales, Customer Service, Maintenance, and IT.
  • Source and manage external companies who can effectively support Merit's supply chain (e.g., freight carriers, freight forwarders, 3PL providers, US Customs, etc.).
  • Define and deploy transportation strategies and develop contingency plans to support the growth of the organization globally, in a cost-effective manner.
  • Develop and implement best practices and monitoring KPI's to drive efficiency, reduce cost, and improve service.
  • Oversees the company's trade compliance, hazardous materials shipping, and freight payment processes.
  • Provide the organization with the tools needed to make educated transportation routing decisions (e.g., mode selection, service level selection, shipment visibility).
  • Ensure the company have the benchmarked best rates that still allows to meet business requirements.
  • Help develop and drive annual cost savings initiatives.
  • Ensure compliance to all laws, rules and regulations associated with international trade, global transportation and transporting hazardous materials and develops, documents and deploys Standard Operating Procedures and other tools to ensure and monitor compliance and to avoid shipping delays
  • Develop and deploy a formalized Supplier Management program to hold suppliers accountable to performance expectations.
  • Provide logistics expertise in support of acquisition activities, from due diligence through onboarding and startup.
  • Establishes and document standardized global procedures for warehousing operations, including operational efficiency, storage capacity, inventory accuracy, shipment accuracy, etc. for both internal and external operations facilities.
  • Help develop the talents and skills of other employees by providing training and growth opportunities.
  • Help create an environment of commitment, communication, ownership, appreciation, and recognition.
  • Develop a customer-oriented mentality across the Shipping organization. Help building a team culture of continuous improvement
  • Bring market intelligence to the organization as it relates to global supply chains, including, but not limited to weather, labor disputes, transportation pricing trends, transportation capacity.
  • Perform other related duties as may be required.

SUMMARY OF MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • BA/BS degree in Supply Chain, Logistics, Industrial Engineering, or equivalent work experience. 7+ years of experience in managing large logistics organization in a multi-divisional, multi-national environment and international shipping.
  • Warehouse/Distribution Center operational management expertise.
  • Must have practical experience and a solid understanding of the differences between and the proper use of Incoterms.
  • Experience with shipping hazardous materials for all modes of transportation is strongly desired.
  • Proven experience with managing large logistics organizations with similar complexity.
  • Demonstrated track record of successful project deployments with quantifiable results.
  • Ability to manage day-to-day operations and multiple cross-functional projects simultaneously.
  • Demonstrated ability to utilize data and metrics to drive decision making and optimization.
  • Experience with Supply Chain Systems, including but not limited to ERP systems, Warehouse & Transportation Management Systems, and Supply Chain visibility tools.
  • Solid organizational skills, including people management, attention to detail, multi-tasking skills, and presentation skills.
  • Excellent verbal/written communication skills.
  • Travel required (up to 30%, although 10% is a more likely scenario) Knowledge of the freight industry.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • MBA preferred.
  • Customs Broker license or related experience is strongly desired.
  • Supply chain experience with medical devices is strongly desired, including experience with shipment regulated by the US FDA.
