I. General Function
This position represents a great opportunity for a talented, highly motivated, and positive individual to become an integral member of BD's Global Operational Excellence (OPEX) community.
Reporting to the Central Continuous Improvement OPEX Leader, the BD ExcellenceAssociate Director will be responsible for developing, delivering, and tracking key metrics for BD Excellence training at our manufacturing sites globally. This will be done by leveraging industry best practices and aligning with Subject Matter Experts across the organization. The ideal candidate will be passionate about delivering training and have a keen focus on partnering with the Plant Leadership Teams and Human Resources to create a culture of BD Excellence and driving Continuous Improvement (CI) across the manufacturing sites.
Main Responsibilities
The BD ExcellenceAssociate Director will lead manufacturing training for BD Excellence capability across our global manufacturing sites, focusing on multiple product families. The candidate's time will be split between creating the strategy and training content, delivering the trainings in the factory environment, supporting BD Excellence initiatives to directly developing capability.
The key responsibility for this role will be driving technical training of the BD Excellence Academy for our manufacturing associates. This will be done through the creation and delivery of training and materials for manufacturing excellence and continuous improvement and supporting and facilitating BD Excellence initiatives at the plants. The delivery of training will be done through a variety of channels (C2C, in person, and virtual). Training standards need to be created, documented, and implemented. Long-term goals include standing up pillar of best practices and network to OPEX leaders and plant managers across the globe.
Specific deliverables for the BD ExcellenceAssociate Director:
  • Develop training roadmap and execution plan.
  • Develop training materials and align with Human Resources, Plant Leadership Teams, and Subject Matter Experts
  • Develop training measurements (what does success look like) and measure and track value across the organization.
  • Partner with stakeholders across the plants to enable training in organization while allowing flexibility with forum, timing, etc.
  • Develop reference material and templates for associates to leverage during and after the training.
  • Leverage BD University and other venues where possible
  • Partner closely with broader OPEX team to train associates with projects in-flight
  • Support global component centers-of-excellence (COEs). Help develop standards and best practices. Optimize methodologies for different manufacturing technologies. Develop and leverage best practices, drive best practice development and adoption. Ensure deploying sites establish and maintain appropriate component KPIs, maintain and promote visibility of global component impact. Support maturity assessment program across multiple business units.
  • Develop and grow BD Excellence impact through deployment of progressively advanced aspects of component methodologies.
  • Help shape and deploy BD Excellence roadmap, coordinate and/or lead specific breakthrough Kaizen events and /or initiatives to achieve the Plant's targeted performance improvement through the practical application of Lean Tools and Principles. Leverage Lean Academy as capability building mechanism to ensure consistent approach and development excellence.
  • Lead focused improvement efforts at key sites to support critical initiatives (e.g., drive OEE, OLE) or other critical projects. Target multiple breakthrough events each year. Challenge existing paradigms and help accelerate the impact of key initiatives.
  • Partner closely with the Plant Managers and Site OPEX Manager to support the development and implementation of the improvement strategy for their BD Excellence Maturity.
  • Serves as a champion to overcome barriers by addressing issues promptly. Does not hesitate to challenge the status quo in search of opportunities that help the business provide cost effective solution to the customer.

  • Accountable for the achievement of key operational goals with represented sites.
  • Will often lead project / initiative teams for the achievement of key operational goals, including cost-to-win, drive OEE /OLE with purpose.
  • Erroneous decisions or recommendations may cause substantial expenditure of human capital and budgeted resources.

Financial Impact:
  • Has influence on the key drivers for profit, loss, and productivity.
  • Has impact on cost and productivity for represented sites within the business unit. E.g., is responsible for CtW performance on Plant's operational efficiency.
  • Accountable to maintain and optimize loss landscape and multi-year cost-to-win project pipeline.

III. Required skills and knowledge:
Technical Area of Expertise:
  • Lean Six Sigma: Black Belt or Master Black Belt certification. Must be knowledgeable in lean tools and continuous improvement methodology and understanding how to use data to drive decision making. Capable of understanding which tools to use in typical manufacturing situations. Trained practitioner of lean, value stream mapping, process mapping, change management, DMAIC, Hoshin-Kanri, Kaizen, etc.
  • Manufacturing: Minimum 10 years manufacturing experience / leadership experience in a plant. Demonstrates a specific and advanced set of skills in Manufacturing Technical training and has direct experience in leading the application of one or more areas of Operational Excellence / Lean production in manufacturing sites
  • Training: Previous experience in developing and delivering technical training in manufacturing sites
  • Facilitation: Must be able to facilitate difficult working sessions with all levels of organization and handle positive and negative feedback and inputs appropriately. Ability to bring positive energy during training and facilitation to keep the attendees engaged and focused throughout the session.
  • Safety: Demonstrated passion for safety, customer centricity and operational excellence
  • Problem Solving: Expertise in solving complex problems and transforming business performance and process through the application of Lean and Six Sigma techniques. Proven track record of bringing order and structure to functions and organizations quickly.
  • Global Acumen: Ability to effectively drive outcomes in large, matrixed organizations and understands how to navigate geographies, cultures, relationships, etc. Can drive work across the globe because of demonstrated excellence in professionalism, professional communication, presence, a high degree of integrity, and willingness/strength to do the right thing in difficult situations.
  • Change Management: Successful change agent; ability to make the case for lean, demonstrate immediate impact and drive cultural change within and across the manufacturing sites. The ideal candidate has been through complex change and tough situations; bringing a will to win with strong followership.
  • Strategic Mindset: Strategic mindset with hands-on approach focusing on the larger picture and ability to put together a training strategy and subsequent plan.
  • Results Oriented: Strong focus on results and driving change across the organization.
  • Collaborative Mindset: Proven ability to effectively build partnerships and take a relationship-based approach in working with internal and external stakeholders at every level of the organization to deliver process efficiencies, cost savings, minimize operational risks and increase process simplification. Comfortable with constructive conflict and debate normally associated with change.
  • Program Management / Office Tools: Very strong organizational, project planning, scheduling and risk management skills and demonstrated experience using project management tools and software. Proficient in the use of all MS Office tools (Email, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, SharePoint, etc.)
  • Executive Communication Skills: Proven ability to communicate key messages to senior leadership audiences and effectively manage key stakeholders.
  • Business Acumen: Business acumen and ability to display the linkage between projects and desired business results.
  • Positive Attitude: Be able to cast a positive attitude and evoke positive responses from others inclusive of those with conflicting priorities.

Education & Desired Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, or other bachelor's degree
  • Minimum 10 years manufacturing experience / leadership experience in a plant. Demonstrates a specific and advanced set of skills in Manufacturing Technical training and has direct experience in leading the application of one or more areas of Operational Excellence / Lean production in manufacturing sites.
  • Lean Six Sigma Black Belt or Master Black Belt certification.
  • Demonstrated experience applying master black belt in manufacturing within industries such as medical, pharmaceutical, automotive, and high technology.
  • Proven experience in leading large initiatives and ability to influence associates at all levels.
  • Experience leading and working with global teams.
  • Flexible and able to travel. Expected travel up to 50% to be present within plants delivering training.
  • Language: Fluent English mandatory

V. Supervision
In accordance with guidance provided by Business OPEX Leader, the incumbent will be required to shape a direct or indirect team to achieve business needs, to drive change and to bring the adequate level of expertise in BD Excellence and Lean production across the organization.
