Associate Biologist – In Vitro, Insulin, Incretin and Obesity Discovery

The Diabetes Obesity and Complications Therapeutic Area (DOCTA) of Eli Lilly and Company, Indianapolis, IN, USA focuses on the discovery of biologics, genetic medicines, and small molecule therapeutics for the treatment of diabetes and associated complications. The Biologist – In VitroIncretin and Insulin Discovery will play a key role in efforts for the development of incretins, insulins, non-insulin injectables, small molecules, and genetic medicines within the DOCTA. Candidates should have some experience with scientific process, how to develop hypothesis, generate data to test the hypothesis, analyze and present your findings. Primary responsibilities will be to learn new cell culture and analytical techniques and apply these to generate data, explore new biology, identify and validate novel targets, and develop new therapeutic molecules. You will be expected to work in collaboration with the Incretin and Insulin Discovery groups in a team-oriented environment and to support other groups in the DOCTA as needed.

• Work with supervisor to develop and implement cell based models. These include but are not limited to the use of human and animal (especially rodent) tissue for primary cell culture, IPSC and adult-derived stem cell culture, and cell lines (parent and engineered lines).
• Perform functional assessments in cell based models to identify and validate drug targets, develop new molecules, and explore mechanism of action for existing molecules.
• Conduct in vivo work such as animal handling and tissue collection.
• Analyze, prepare, and present data for internal team meetings as well as external disclosures (abstracts, posters, manuscripts).
• Accurately keep records and reporting of data in written and oral formats. Will perform work in full compliance with Lilly Research Policies, and complete all required training activities in the timeframe specified.

Bachelor's Degree in biology, chemistry, microbiology or research experience in a closely related field.

• Experience in experimental troubleshooting
• Experience working in a laboratory team environment
• Experience with data analysis and presentation
• Experience with cell or microbial culture requiring aseptic technique
• Some exposure to molecular techniques, especially gene expression profiling, some understanding of gene manipulation techniques is a plus
• Successful candidate must be scientifically curious and ready to learn. They will be exposed to new cell based modeling and analytical techniques

Flexible scheduling is a requirement. The position is full-time (40 hrs/wk), but not all regularly scheduled work hours will occur Mon-Fri from 8 AM-4:45 PM. There is a requirement to work after-hours or on weekends on occasion.
