Job Description
Tenure-track faculty position at the assistant or associate professor level, depending on qualifications, with the Caesar Kleberg Wildlife Research Institute (CKWRI), Department of Rangeland and Wildlife Sciences (RWSC), College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Texas A&M University-Kingsville (TAMUK). This is a 75% research and 25% teaching, tenure-track, 9-month appointment with potential for summer salary. We seek a dynamic scholar to build an internationally recognized research program focused on Geospatial Sciences, Remote Sensing, and geographic information systems, teach courses on landscape ecology, Remote Sensing and other related subjects, train graduate and undergraduate students in relevant areas of Remote Sensing as it applies to the application of monitoring and assessing ecosystem/rangeland dynamics, collaborate with CKWRI scientists and graduate students, and extend results to stakeholders, society, and the scientific community. The successful candidate will supervise CKWRI's Spatial Analysis Laboratory and administer a permanently positioned graduate fellow who will assist in lab logistics and management. Initial salary shall be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Responsibilities:
  • Develop an extramurally-funded research program focusing on Geospatial Sciences and Remote Sensing commensurate with a 75% research appointment.

  • Teach one graduate-level course and one undergraduate-level course (one class per semester) to meet the needs of the Department.

  • Advise and mentor graduate and undergraduate students in research.

  • Collaborate with CKWRI scientists and graduate students conducting research in landscape and spatial ecology.

  • Supervise CKWRI's Spatial Analysis Laboratory and oversee resources available to support the laboratory.

  • Participate in the academic affairs of the department, college, and university as needed.

Qualifications:
  • Ph.D. in wildlife science, ecology, rangeland ecology, geography, Remote Sensing, or related field from an accredited university.

  • Evidence of a nationally-recognized program in Geospatial Sciences and/or Remote Sensing demonstrated by record of research productivity.

  • Ability to teach courses in landscape ecology and geographic information systems.

  • Demonstrated potential to attract extramural funding.

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate with students, professionals, lay audiences, and other scientists.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Strong quantitative skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with private landowners, faculty, students, and state, federal, and private natural resource organizations.

  • Demonstrated ability to implement cloud-based geospatial analyses (e.g., Google Earth Engine)

  • Post-doctoral experience which may include university teaching and research.

  • Experience supervising a spatial analysis laboratory or similar unit.

  • Expertise in UAV and airborne sensors to collect hyperspectral, multispectral, LIDAR, and very-high resolution imagery/data.

  • Willingness to work collaboratively with CKWRI scientists and students to use cutting-edge spatial and GIS analyses in research projects.

CKWRI, RWSC, and TAMUK: CKWRI is a privately funded research unit at TAMUK that has provided science-based information for enhancing the conservation and management of Texas wildlife and rangelands for over 40 years. The successful applicant will join an established and award-winning team of ~30 faculty and research staff who work with ~55 M.S. and Ph.D. students to conduct innovative and applied research in partnership with numerous non-government organizations, state and federal agencies, and private landowners. As faculty members of the RWSC Department, CKWRI's scientists also mentor, educate, and provide hands-on experiences to ~150 undergraduate students, playing a critical role in developing the next generation of wildlife professionals. Faculty and students alike enjoy small class sizes at TAMUK, a small Hispanic-Serving Institution serving ~7,000 students and the oldest, continuously operating public institution of higher learning in South Texas.
Location: The University is located in historic Kingsville, a friendly, safe city of 25,000 that is the home of the legendary King Ranch. Corpus Christi (population: ~300,000) and its beaches are just 40 miles to the northeast, and the border with Mexico is 120 miles to the south at Brownsville or 120 miles to the west at Laredo. The region boasts world-class fishing and birding, access to the longest, undeveloped barrier island in the world (Padre Island National Seashore), and a friendly community rich in history and culture.
