Description
IMMEDIATE VACANCIES:
Permanent Full-Time: (KIHEI)
Assists in the supervision and participates in the operation, maintenance, overhaul and repair of a Class II, III, or IV Wastewater Treatment Plant and it's related tributary pumping plants, equipment and facilities; and performs other related duties as required.
Distinguishing Characteristics:
These classes differ from the Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator I, II, III, and IV in that the Assistant Wastewater Treatment Plant Operationand Maintenance Supervisor II, III, and IV assists in the supervision and participates in the operation, maintenance, overhaul and repair of a Class II, III, or IV Wastewater Treatment Plant and it's related tributary pumping plants, equipment and facilities; whereas the Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator I, II, III, and IV independently operates and maintains a Class I, II, III, or IV Wastewater Treatment Plant, equipment and facilities.
These classes differ from the Wastewater TreatmentPlant Operation and Maintenance Supervisor II, III, and IV in that the Assistant Wastewater Treatment Plant Operationand Maintenance Supervisor II, III, IV assists in the supervision and participates in the operation, maintenance, overhaul and repair of a Class II, III, or IV Wastewater Treatment Plant and it's related tributary pumping plants, equipment and facilities; whereas the Wastewater Treatment Plant Operation and Maintenance supervisor II, III, and IV supervises through subordinate supervisors and has immediate charge of and twenty-four (24) hour responsibility for, all operational, maintenance, overhaul and repair activities at a Class II, III, or IV Wastewater Treatment and tributary pumping plants.
Examples of Duties
The following are examples of duties and are not necessarily descriptive of any one position in this class. The omission of specific duties statements does not preclude management from assigning such duties if such duties are a logical assignment for the position.
Assists in the supervision and participates in the Operation and Maintenance of a Wastewater Treatment Plant and its related tributary pumping plants to regulate the flow of wastewater, air and sludge through the various stages of the treatment processes; the monitoring and controlling of various equipment to regulate the flow of wastewater to and from the pumping plants; the reading and recording of data from meters, gauges and other recording devices and the interpretation of the data to maintain or improve Plant Operations; the inspection of plant and equipment for malfunctions, irregularities and needed repairs; the lubricating, oil changing and the making of repairs and adjustments to machinery and equipment; the installation, overhaul, repair and testing of treatment and pumping plant equipment; the draining and cleaning of settling tanks, clarifiers, chlorinating chambers, digesters and aeration tanks; the maintenance of sludge digestion systems, dewatering equipment, drying beds and pulverizers; the collection of samples of raw, partially treated and treated wastewater and sludge in order to perform chemical and physical analyses including settleable solid, settleability, PH, chlorine residual, dissolved oxygen and suspended solids; the interpreting of laboratory results, making appropriate process adjustments; the maintenance of test result records, data sheets and reports; the computer input and extraction of data and reports; the painting and rustproofing of equipment, buildings and structures; the review of construction prints, machinery drawings, and manufacturer's manual to make necessary repair and work computations in performing repair work; and the keeping of station logs and other operational reports.
Minimum Qualification Requirements
Training and Experience:
Grade IV: A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from high school, and four and one-half (4-1/2) years of full-time work experience in the Operation and Maintenance of a Grade III or higher level Wastewater Treatment Plant.
License Requirement: Possession of the applicable Hawaii Mandatory Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Certificate; possession of a valid Hawaii state driver's license (Type 3).
Knowledge of: principles and practices of supervision; practices and procedures used in the operation, maintenance, overhaul and repair of Wastewater Treatment and pumping plant equipment; the various types of wastewaters and associated problems and processes; sampling methods and the physical and chemical tests used in Treatment Plant control; servicing requirements of moving machinery; hazards and safety practices involved in working around high voltage equipment and moving machinery; plant quality control requirements and measures in dealing with process malfunctions and emergencies; uses of mechanic hand and power tools, materials, and equipment associated in mechanical repair work.
Ability to: assign and supervise the work of others; operate and maintain electrical pumping units and auxiliary equipment; diagnose problems in plant equipment and supervise and participate in their correction; read and interpret meters and gauges; record readings and maintain operating records; input and extract data and reports from computer files; instruct others in operational practices and procedures relating to Treatment Plant equipment; perform the required laboratory tests and analyze results; act quickly and effectively in emergencies; understand and follow oral and written instructions; work harmoniously with others; handle weights and loads; and read and understand construction prints, machinery drawings and manufacturer's manuals.
Health and Physical Condition:
Persons seeking appointment to positions in this class must meet the health and physical condition standards deemed necessary and proper for performance of the duties.

Special Working Conditions: exposure to hazardous, filthy and obnoxious conditions; may also be subject to shift, weekend and holiday work as required.

Reciprocity:
Out-of-state applicants who possess a Wastewater Treatment Plant operator certification in their state and who are seeking employment with the County of Maui should first inquire with the State of Hawai'i Department of Health (DOH) on how to obtain a Hawai'i Operator Grade IV certification through reciprocity.
If you intend to apply for reciprocity certification with the DOH, please note one of the requirements is that the applicant provide a letter verifying application of employment in the State of Hawai'i.
Therefore, after you apply for a job with the County of Maui, you will need to contact the County of Maui Department of Personnel Services to request the verification letter to submit to the DOH.

The above examination is being given on an open-competitive basis to establish an eligible list which shall be effective for not more than one year unless extended by the Director of Personnel Services.

Pre-Employment/Post-Offer Drug Screening Test: All applicants, who will enter a safety sensitive position or certain designated categories that the Personnel Services Director has established or who are required by law to be drug tested must pass a pre-employment/post-offer drug screening test as a condition of employment.
