Position Information
An Assistant Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator participates in the operation, maintenance and repair of various WASTEWATER TREATMENT and tributary pumping plants for training and developmental purposes; performs progressively difficult tasks to prepare for eventual operator certification; and performs other related duties as required.
Current Vacancy Information:
There are 8 vacancies at various WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT locations across Oahu with the Department of Environmental Services, Wastewater Treatment and Disposal Division. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Assists and/or participates in the operation and maintenance of various Wastewater Treatment and Wastewater Pumping Plants.
  • Assists in the installation, overhaul, repair, and testing of Wastewater Treatment and Pumping Plant equipment.
  • Performs progressively difficult tasks individually, and under the direction and/or guidance of higher level operators and/or supervisors, for training and development purposes and to qualify for certification.
  • Work schedule includes shift, weekend, and holiday work as required.
  • Required to respond to and work during emergencies and overtime conditions due to manpower shortages.

Special Working Conditions: Exposure to active machinery, high voltages, depths and heights, toxic and explosive gases, high pressure fluid systems, and disease-bearing wastewater. Works in obnoxious, filthy and hazardous environment.

Minimum Qualification Requirements
At time of application, you must be a citizen, national or permanent resident alien of the United States or a non-citizen eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment.
EDUCATION REQUIREMENT:Graduation from high school or equivalent, satisfactory to the State Board of Certification of Operating Personnel in Wastewater Plants.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:
Experience and/or training of sufficient scope and quality to show competence in assisting in the operation and/or maintenance of pumping plant, marine engine room, power plant or related industrial-type equipment.
Such experience must have demonstrated the knowledge of the practices and procedures used in the operation and maintenance of common plant equipment such as pumps, valves, motors, blowers, meters, gauges, etc.; hazards and safety practices involved in working around high voltage equipment and moving machinery; and the ability to operate, monitor, and maintain electrical pumping units and auxiliary equipment common to industrial-type plants; open and close valves as directed; read meters and gauges, record readings, and maintain operational records; make necessary arithmetical computations; read and comprehend written materials; learn technical and specialized processes pertinent to WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT work, including required laboratory analyses; use common hand tools; understand and follow oral and written instructions; work harmoniously with others; and handle weights and loads.
Examples of Qualifying Experience: Marine machining, marine engine room tending, boiler tending, tank farms (oil or gas) tending, pumping equipment installing, aircraft mechanic, automotive mechanic, sugar mills or any comparable stationary equipment repair.
Examples of Qualifying Training: Certificate of Participation/Proficiency in Process Technology; Associate of Science in Automotive or Diesel Mechanic Technology.
Education obtained outside of the United States must be comparable to a degree earned at a regionally-accredited college/university in the United States. In order to receive credit for the education, a foreign credential evaluation (FCE) must be provided. We also reserve the right to request further information about your academic program, evidence of comparability, or an original transcript.

LICENSE REQUIREMENT:
1. Valid driver's license (Type 3/automobile), prior to appointment; and
2. Temporary Hawaii Mandatory Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Certificate, prior to completion of probation.
The above license and certificate must be maintained on a current basis thereafter as a condition of employment.
