Job description

The top claims leadership position within Grinnell Re and is responsible for the operation of an independent claims service provided to farm mutual program customers on a contract basis. In addition, this leader oversees all claims functions provided for the division assumed reinsurance portfolio and supporting insurance product portfolios. Works collaboratively with the division leaders and other division teams to direct and monitor claims activities. Accountable for the division underwriting profits and losses. Plans, directs, and oversees all claims activities relative to management OF REINSURANCE portfolio and independent claims service. Ensures that policies, procedures, and programs align with the company's objectives, strategies, and expected results.

  • Develops a profitable independent claims service for member companies and division portfolio. Develops short- and long-range goals, strategies, and processes.

 

  • Serves as a resource and provides claims expertise both internally and externally. Creates an environment that encourages optimum performance and productivity for claims staff members.

 

  • Develops and coordinates catastrophe claims response plans with mutual members. This includes handling catastrophe claims with Grinnell Re staff adjusters or one of several pre-arranged vendor relationships. 

 

  • Ensures subrogation and salvage processes are implemented for claim recoveries. Builds network of appropriate experts to ensure maximum recoveries are realized.

 

  • Establishes and executes an audit program to ensure reinsurance partners are handling claims in accordance with best claims handling practices. This includes both member mutuals and the division assumed reinsurance portfolio.

 

  • Serves as point person for communication with other departments regarding policies, procedures, and other department issues not specific to the handling of individual claims.

 

  • Serves as an example of leadership and professionalism while representing Grinnell Mutual. Attends and participates in meetings internally and externally as requested and champions corporate decisions, giving appropriate leadership, support, and direction to claims staff and others impacted.  May require travel to outside locations and organizations. 

 

  • Reviews recommendations and sets scope of authority for individual adjusters, claims specialists, supervisors, managers, and directors.

 

  • Researches and implements changes to policy and procedures within the REINSURANCE CLAIMS division.

 

  • Responsibile for the profitability and all contract pricing decisions for the independent claims service.

 

  • Contributes to the review of mutual partners and decisions regarding rates and contract renewals.

 

  • Plans salary budget for team and submits request during planning time. Considers merit increases, promotional increases and add to staff needs when making request. Adheres to set budget throughout fiscal year. 

 

  • Responsible for adhering to budget constraints. Ensures effective control of results and takes corrective action to achieve technology objectives within designated budgets. 

 

  • Assists with overseeing the operating, capital expenditure, and salary budgets of the division.

 

  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with ten (10) years of property casualty claims experience. Demonstrated skill set in best practices related to the insurance industry; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Reinsurance related experience preferred.

 

  • Industry designations preferred (eg. AIC, CPCU, CFA, CPA, FCAS).

 

  • Demonstrated ability to proactively and strategically plan and problem solve in areas related to claims and to business needs. Ability to think creatively to develop solutions that create business opportunities and generate options to achieve short- and long-range goals.  Ability to analyze options and risks of a plan to determine which solution is best for organization.

 

  • Ability to use personal judgment, experience, known facts and figures to make effective decisions and build a consensus with others when appropriate. Ability to remain flexible enough to adapt as needed to respond to changing business needs.

 

  • Possess advance knowledge of business, industry, and market information with ability to apply knowledge to job responsibilities. Must have advanced knowledge of policy language and its application.  Demonstrated ability to stay current with related regulations and share the information with staff members.

 

  • Ability to demonstrate leadership by serving as a role model for divisional employees and company as a whole; developing and communicating corporate goals; and mentor/develop staff to move towards higher levels of performance. Utilizes effective leadership skills to obtain positive company results.

 

  • Overnight travel for mutual visits, training or conferences required.

 

  • Frequently works with all levels of employees throughout the organization. Most often the audience is division personnel, division heads, and periodically senior leaders.

 

  • Frequently has contact with the company’s customer force including the mutual managers and mutual claims staff. May have some contact with key vendors, insurance agents, and attorneys.

 

  • Requires regular and predictable attendance to meet the customer needs of the position.  

 

  • Must be able to maintain confidentiality and proprietary information.

 

  • Demonstrated ability to adhere to all Grinnell Mutual policies.

 

  • Demonstrated ability to incorporate Grinnell Mutual core values in all areas work.
Supervisory Responsibility:
  • Leader of direct and indirect reports for the claims team. Carries out leadership responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; develop and set goals with team; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
Working Conditions and Physical Efforts:

  • The location of the position is flexible depending on the individual and state of operation. The position is physically located in a remote home office or the Grinnell Mutual campus with a work environment of a typical office setting. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

 

  • The position may require frequent and extended time on the telephone and visual acuity to work on the computer for extended periods of time. The position requires an individual to sit for long periods of time.

 

  • May be required to travel to claims sites, mutual offices, training sites, or meeting sites. Travel may be greater when the volume of claims is particularly high as a result of weather, accident, or other catastrophic situation. May be required to work outside of core business hours in order to meet deadlines associated with the position and may result in various levels of stress  

 

  • Ability to lift up-to 10 pounds occasionally.
