Reporting to the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), the Assistant Vice President (AVP) is responsible with ensuring the safe and reliable operation of critical infrastructure and facilities engineering. A key part of the AVP's duties is managing assets, resources, and teams that are essential for critical planning and optimization of the built environment. This is all done in support of clinical care and to enhance the overall patient experience.
The AVP oversees the facilities management operations and provides direct operational and strategic leadership for Facilities/Engineering, Safety, Security, Emergency Management, Environment of Care Program and SBH Parking.
The AVP will play an integral role in the formation and implementation of capital plans regarding engineering and infrastructure upgrades, plans for new buildings, building systems, and central plants.
Essential Job Duties & Responsibilities
- Plans, implements, and directs best business/engineering practices to manage people, resources, processes, and systems. Safely and effectively maintain and operate SBH’s physical plant, equipment, infrastructure, grounds, fire detection and suppression systems, and energy efficiency, etc.
- Ensures adherence to all regulatory requirements (Joint Commission, CMS, FDNY, NYC DOB, etc). Directs the integration of regulatory compliance staff activities, programs, processes and systems with site operations and tracks and reports progress routinely. Coordinates with SBH Environment of Care regarding safety and engineering regulatory programs and activities.
- Regularly communicates and interacts with senior stakeholders, clinical leadership, department managers regarding physical plant, equipment and regulatory conditions, and operational issues. Ensures the follow-up and resolution of any operational issues that require senior management intervention; communicates issues in a timely and effective manner to the CAO.
- Establishes, communicates, and implements annual objectives and long-range goals for the department. Establishes annual performance goals, plans and accountability metrics for direct reports and oversee the roll out to their managers and supervisors.
- Oversees the preparation of the annual departmental operating and capital budgets.
- Ensure accurate maintenance repair logs and records, utilizing company systems.
- Oversees the evaluation and selection of major engineering contracts that support Facilities-Engineering strategic planning and preventive maintenance requirements. Works closely with Finance and Procurement to implement and monitor processes for management of service contracts, vendor selections and procurement policies and procedures.
- Manage and work closely with service vendors, construction contractors, and third party engineering teams to ensure proper follow through on work orders, repairs, and maintenance for all assets.
- Advises and prepares reports to the CAO on facility conditions, personnel, work process, budget, systems activities and issues.
- Prepares regular reports and materials on Engineering activities and risk management for the CAO, Senior leaders, etc.
- Ensures that Facilities Operations staff adheres to Departmental and SBH policies and procedures and other requirements.
- Serves as the organization representative for Engineering/Facilities Operations representative on various SBH committees as designated by the CAO.
- Performs all duties inherent to managerial role. Participates in hiring, training, engagement, evaluation and termination of assigned staff according to hospital policies and procedures.

Work Experience
- Minimum of 10 years engineering management industry experience, preferably in the healthcare field, or other related environment (R)
- Previous management experience in engineering procurement, service and maintenance contracts and business processes and systems (R)
- Management, organizational development, systems and process improvement expertise (R)
- Knowledge of relevant regulatory codes, etc. (R)
- Exceptional analytical, communication, interpersonal skills (R)
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (R)
