Assistant Professor of Interior Design

Wayne State University is searching for an experienced Assistant Professor of Interior Design at its Detroit campus location.

Essential functions (job duties):

Located in the heart of Detroit's Cultural Center, Wayne StateUniversity is seeking a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor in Designwith a teaching emphasis in Interior Design in the James Pearson DuffyDepartment of Art, Art History, and Design.
The ideal candidate is, first, excited tocome to Detroit. This person understands Detroit is a city of arts and culture,where its core identity is rooted in innovation and creativity. Wayne StateUniversity's distinct characteristic is its Detroit location. A center fordesign and innovation, Detroit is the only city in the US, designated as a UNESCO Cityof Design. The DetroitInstitute of Arts, one of the nation's premiere art museums is a block fromcampus. Detroit is rich with engagement opportunities, of note is the dynamic annualDetroit Month of Design, a series of exhibitions and events in venues acrossthe city and surrounding the Wayne State Campus.
This position is the perfect opportunity for the rightperson to be part of the Detroit design community and a member of a team offaculty shaping the department and the Interior Design program.
RESPONSIBILITIES: The successful candidate will teachcourses in Interior Design and may teach in other spatial design areas of thedepartment that connect to the candidate's research expertise. The candidatewill teach undergraduate and graduate courses, conduct a program of creativeand/or scholarly work, contribute to curriculum development and other aspectsof the intellectual life of the department, and provide appropriateprofessional service.

THE JAMES PEARSON DUFFY DEPARTMENT OF ART, ART HISTORY, AND DESIGN:  The department has a deep history in Detroitlocated at the center of the historic Cass Corridor art movement. Thedepartment offers programs leading to the following undergraduate degrees: BAin Art, BFA in Art, BFA in Design, BA in Art History and BA or BS in FashionDesign and Merchandising. The department also offers the following graduatedegrees: MA in Art, MFA in Art, and MA in Art History. The department currentlyhas 21 full-time faculty and a staff of 10 for 15 graduate students and 600undergraduate students.  Qualifications:

We are seeking an exceptionaldesigner/teacher with a strong research practice in Interior Design or arelated field. An appropriate terminal degree isrequired in design, art or closely related field. A willingness to mentorundergraduate and graduate students from diverse populations is also required.

Preferred qualifications:

We are seeking an exceptional Interior Designer with a strong research practice and experience teaching Interior Design at the college level. A minimum of two years teaching at the college level, and evidence of teaching effectiveness.
