ASSISTANT PROFESSOR- Environmental Justice
The Department of Environmental Studies at The State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY ESF) in Syracuse, NY invites applications for an academic year, tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor rank, starting in the Fall of 2024. We seek individuals who will advance research and teaching in Environmental Justice. The ideal candidate would engage with applied and/or theoretical work at the intersection of environmental (in)justice, policy, and/or planning and would have community-based research experience that contributes to innovative scholarship in the critical environmental social sciences. We are interested in scholars whose work intersects and engages with current conversations on (but not limited to) decolonization, antiracism, migration and displacement, status concerns, class, sexuality and gender, food, water, climate or energy justice, extractivism, or geographic vulnerability.
With robust mentoring and research infrastructure support, new hires will be able to establish interdisciplinary connections, link with community groups and policymakers, and work within new research paradigms. The candidate would have the opportunity to connect with other units on campus and across our academic community, including Graduate Program in Environmental Sciences and the Center for Native Peoples and the Environment at ESF, and programs at Syracuse University including the Program for the Advancement of Conflict and Collaboration. The candidate can also contribute to diversity in teaching through on-campus programs, such as the Louis Stokes Alliance of Minority Participation Program. The Syracuse area is also rich with opportunities for vital research in Environmental Justice, and ESF faculty are currently working to build collaborative, community-based research initiatives across several issue areas in the city and the surrounding region.
Responsibilities: The successful candidate will be expected to build a strong research program. The position entails a balance of research and teaching, with the remainder of time focusing on service and outreach to the department, institution, and to the communities and publics your work might impact. The teaching load is 2 courses per semester, both undergraduate and graduate courses. Successful candidates will be expected to teach an undergraduate course in Environmental Justice and an online Graduate Certificate course in Environmental Justice. Other courses might include Introduction to Environmental Studies, Policy Analysis / Evaluation or courses within one's areas of expertise. The selected candidate will be expected to collaborate with colleagues and students across other disciplines at the College and within the broader academic community, and to mentor graduate and undergraduate students. We are particularly interested in candidates with a commitment to diversity and inclusiveness and to someone with lived experience in, and a commitment to, the communities they study. We are open to candidates meeting the required criteria (a PhD in a relevant field) whose work in Environmental Justice has taken them to contexts other than academia - that is, to people who have played a research or research leadership role in government, think-tanks, non-profits, or corporate environments.

Location: With a total enrollment of about 2,200 undergraduates and 400 graduate students, combined with the immediate proximity of Syracuse University and Upstate Medical University, ESF provides an intimate, small-college atmosphere within a vibrant, large-university setting.
