About This Role:
The Department of Diagnostic Medicine/Pathobiology College of Veterinary Medicine, Kansas State University is seeking a full-time Assistant Lab Safety Manager. This position will oversee laboratory safety in the department and provide assistance to the Department Head coordinating the research activities of the department.
Responsibilities include:
Enforce and manage federal and state safety regulations for laboratory and animal use for research, teaching and diagnostics for DMP and KSVDL. These tasks include, but are not limited to the following:
Perform ongoing inspections for 50+ laboratories for research, teaching and diagnostics. Make recommendations and implementation plans for all corrective measures identified.
Liaison on laboratory issues for internal and external partners: Institutional Biosafety Committee, Facilities, KSU Environmental Health & Safety, Biosecurity Research Institute, USDA, CDC, DHS, US Army, Fire Marshall, Large Animal Research Facility, AirSafe, PipetteTek, Getinge, miscellaneous vendors, KSU CVM Department Heads and KSU Radiation Safety.
Enforce and manage Federal and State safety regulations.
Perform risk assessments and implement risk management recommendations, and oversee risk communications.
Review and investigate accident reports and Memos for Records to control or eliminate hazards for departments.
Complete/Manage/Review/Consult on permits for research, teaching and diagnostics (USDA, CDC, DHS, KSU IBC, KSU IRB, KSU IACUC).
Manage and enforce protocols for hazardous waste disposal and chemical, biological and radioactive wastes.
Provide SDS (formerly MSDS) materials and enforce documentation and filing of SDS.
Develop and manage all safety training for employees, volunteers and visitors.
Manage identification badges.
Develop and/or edit protocols, SOPs, and manuals related to laboratory safety. Ongoing evaluation of CVM Safety program.
Oversee laboratory design for remodels and relocations.
Consult with development personnel on safety regulations.
Serve as committee member for the following committees: Safety, Security and Emergency Management, Web Advisory, Occupational Health & Safety, Facilities Planning, Environmental Health & Safety.
Consult on laboratory designs and workflow for new and remodeled laboratory space.
Address emergency situations and emergency contact for chemical/biological spills, fire, tornado, electrical outage, system failures, improper waste disposal, flooding, etc.
Manage ongoing audit requests: chemical, equipment, radiation, permits, biological storage, space inventory, etc.
Ongoing enforcement of the use of proper protective equipment.
Oversee storage locations: equipment, freezers/coolers, biological safety cabinets, chemicals, documents, shipping materials, etc.
Ensure that all chemicals, biohazards, samples, supplies, equipment and personal items are properly housed and maintained.

What You'll Need to Succeed:
Minimum Qualifications:
- Requires a bachelor's degree and one year of relevant experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
- M.S. in Biomedical Science or B.S. with four years of Research Management experience.
Excellent verbal and written English communication skills.
Other Requirements:
