ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT OF HUMAN SERVICE PROGRAMS:The Department of Human Service Programs (DHSP) creates and coordinates services that enhance the quality of life for Cambridge residents. Driven by the needs of residents, DHSP's extensive services and programs touch almost every sector in the city: from newborns to senior citizens, from school-aged children to homeless families, from non-profit organizations to local employers.
ABOUT THE ROLE:The Assistant Golf Professional, in coordination with the Director of Golf, is responsible for executing all aspects of the Thomas P. O'Neill, Jr./Fresh Pond Golf Course, an environmentally sensitive and challenging public nine-hole golf course operating from early spring through early December located on part of the Fresh Pond Reservation and operated under the guidelines of the Fresh Pond Stewardship Plan.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:The Fresh Pond Golf Course is an extremely busy facility, where pace of play monitoring and collaboration between starters, rangers and professional staff is of utmost importance. The Assistant Golf Professional will be responsible for a wide range of activities to ensure the smooth operation of the course and best possible experience for patrons. The Assistant Golf Professional will conduct themselves in accordance with the standards accepted by the City of Cambridge and those established by the PGA of America. Reporting to the Director of Golf, the specific duties include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Develop an understanding of the golf course, including physical layout and amenities, programmatic offerings, facilities and equipment, and assess playing conditions with the guidance of the Director of Golf and Superintendent.
  • Oversee daily operational activities, such as but not limited to: daily fee collection, rental of pull carts and carts, and sale of golf merchandise.
  • Properly record sales, beginning of day and end of day reports.
  • Provide supervision and support to the Superintendent and staff when the Director of Golf is unavailable.
  • Execute tournaments and leagues (Format sheets, registration, scorecards, tee times or shotgun preparation, communication of results).
  • Offer basic club repair and spike replacement services.
  • Support youth programming and promote sport through partnerships with city and community partners.
  • Create a warm and welcoming environment for all patrons of Fresh Pond Golf Course.
  • Ensure cart staging area and pull cart areas are displayed in a clean and orderly manner.
  • Ensure the clubhouse is presented in a professional manner.
  • Support the creation and execution of a plan for off-season use, care and maintenance of the course in conjunction with the Director of Golf and Superintendent.
  • Actively engage in and support the Department's Race and Equity Initiative.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Education and Experience:
  • Professional Golf Association (PGA) Class A Member or Associate working towards PGA Membership or LPGA Membership.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Demonstrated skills in communicating effectively and responsively with diverse members of the public.
  • Strong time management and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office, Outlook, Rec Trac.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS, WORKING CONDITIONS, WORK FLEXIBILITY AND ACCOMODATIONS:
  • Ability to access, input and retrieve information from a computer
  • Ability to answer phones and maintain multiple files
  • Ability to traverse the course to identify conditions
  • Ability to lift a minimum of at least 30 lbs.
  • Ability to travel to meetings within the city
  • Be comfortable to work primarily in the Golf Clubhouse with moderate noise level, telephones, personal computer, and printer, as well as outside on the course.
