About the Department
The NC State Office of General Counsel
The NC State Office of General Counsel provides, manages, and coordinates all legal services for the university in a collegial, responsive, and professional manner. The office provides legal and risk management advice on a wide variety of matters to the Board of Trustees, the Chancellor, senior officers, other university administrators, and faculty and staff who are acting on behalf of the university. The office represents the university in administrative proceedings before federal and state agencies and coordinates all litigation matters.
Essential Job Duties
The person selected will engage in a wide-ranging, intellectually challenging, fast-paced, and demanding practice of higher education law. Practice areas will focus on general higher education legal matters. The attorney hired for this position will begin as a generalist and may advise on the full range of issues the university faces including in the following areas: general litigation, administrative agency complaints, student affairs, employment, security, and privacy laws including FERPA, HIPAA, and public records, general transactional matters, risk management matters, and review and revision of University policies. Other duties may include responding to administrative agency complaints, coordinating the university's response to subpoenas and discovery requests, conducting legal research on complex issues, internal investigations and fact gathering. Depending on experience, the individual may work under the supervision of other attorneys in the office. The duties of this position may also expand to include supporting other attorneys in the office in various practice areas as needed, as well as handling other matters as determined by the Vice Chancellor and General Counsel.

Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience
  • A law degree from an ABA accredited law school
  • At least 3 years of relevant legal experience
  • Candidate must be admitted to the North Carolina State Bar, or must become a member within one year of hiring

Other Required Qualifications
  • Strong analytical and creative problem-solving skills
  • Strong research, writing, drafting, and client counseling skills

Preferred Qualifications
  • Ability to juggle shifting priorities and multiple, demanding projects
  • Detail-oriented with organizational proficiency and excellent follow through
  • Prior representation of higher education clients, in-house experience, and/or prior litigation or transactional experience is preferred
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community
