Position Summary Information
Minimum Qualifications
- Must possess a law degree from an accredited law school and a minimum of three years experience as a practicing attorney/and or judicial clerk (this position is structured to be an early career professional opportunity);
- Must be admitted to the North Carolina bar or be admitted to the bar of another state and prepared to seek immediate admission in North Carolina within one year of the date of employment;
- Well-developed analytic and writing skills. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
- Must possess high ethical standards, mature judgment, and the capacity to facilitate constructive outcomes in a fast-paced, high-volume, complex environment involving an array of distinct stakeholders and faculty, staff, and students from diverse backgrounds;
- Must have collegial working style and the ability to work well on teams, sound judgment, superior intellectual capacity, flexibility, and creativity;
- Must have computer skills for creating, editing, and publishing legal memoranda, briefs, contracts, and other work products.
License/Certification Required
North Carolina Bar membership in good standing, or licensure in good standing in another state on the date of initial employment and licensure to practice law in North Carolina within one year of initial date of employment pursuant to The University of North Carolina Policy Manual, Section 300.1.3.
Preferred Qualifications
- Relevant experience working for a higher educational or government institution;
- Focused experience in one or more of the following areas is also preferred:
- Employment law (including FMLA/OFLA, ADA, discrimination, and similar issues);
- Immigration law (including issues related to visas for foreign national students and employees); and
- Contract review and drafting (particularly for higher education or governmental clients).

The Assistant General Counsel must demonstrate:
