About the Opportunity
The Office of Legal Affairs seeks to fill an entry levelAssistant General Counsel position. The winning candidate will be aprofessionally-extroverted attorney who will serve the UNC System and willengage in a wide-ranging, intellectually challenging, fast-paced, and demandingpractice in an educational setting. Because of the high standard we require,this position will remain open until filled by the correct candidate.

The position will work in the Office of Legal Affairs toprovide legal advice and counsel to the UNC Board of Governors, the officersand departments of the UNC System Office, the UNC constituent institutions, andaffiliated entities. The position serves under the supervision and direction ofthe senior vice president and General Counsel and may take assignments fromother peer and senior attorneys. 

The UNC System Office is in Raleigh, North Carolina.  This position will be expected to bephysically on location in Raleigh at least four (4) days a week, residence inWake County is strongly preferred.

This position will work closely with, and often at thedirection of, other attorneys in the Office of Legal Affairs to provideprofessional, actionable legal advice and counsel in a variety of subjectareas, including human resources and employment law, budget and finance,governance, and risk management. Key responsibilities will include:

  • drafting and revising UNC policies.
  • conducting legal research and drafting legal documents (including memoranda and opinions).
  • reviewing, drafting, and negotiating contracts and service agreements.
  • providing litigation support, including discovery review.

About the UNC System Office
The UNC System Office includes the offices of the President and other senior administrators of the multi-campus University of North Carolina System. The UNC System is a treasured public institution dedicated to serving the people of North Carolina through world-class teaching, research, and community engagement. Today, nearly 250,000 students are enrolled in our 16 universities across the state and at the NC School of Science and Mathematics. System Office staff is responsible for executing the policies of the UNC Board of Governors and providing University-wide leadership in the areas of academic affairs, business and financial management, long-range planning, student affairs, research, legal affairs, and government relations. The UNC System Office also has administrative oversight of a number of University affiliates, including PBS North Carolina, the North Carolina Arboretum, the NC State Education Assistance Authority, and University of North Carolina Press.

About the Team
The Legal Affairs division provides advice and counsel to the Board of Governors, the President, and members of the senior staff with regard to all legal and policy issues affecting the University including litigation, employment and personnel, research, intellectual property, real property and construction, governance and parliamentary procedure, privacy and public information, ethics and conflicts of interest, risk management, fiscal accountability, student and academic affairs, and constitutional issues affecting higher education. The division serves as the University's primary liaison to the North Carolina Department of Justice for purposes of ensuring appropriate management of the University's litigation matters and is responsible for developing and implementing policies and procedures to promote awareness and compliance University system-wide with all applicable federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and administrative requirements.

Minimum Education, Experience, and Skills
J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school and license to practice law in North Carolina or be able to become licensed within one year from the date of appointment with 1-3 years of relevant experience.

  • Demonstrated ability to provide legal advice and counsel in a clear, cogent, and understandable manner and in such formats as may be desired by the organization, including through written correspondence, memoranda, briefs, and presentations, with little or no editing or revision by supervisors.
  • Strong ability to develop and maintain collegial, professional relationships with colleagues and clients.
  • Ability to juggle shifting priorities and projects.
