Description

POSITION SUMMARY

The position is responsible for assisting the Head Coach with organizing and instructing the Football program at Orange Lutheran High School. The Defensive Coordinator assists with conducting practices, motivating students, and instructing student-athletes in-game strategies and techniques in preparation for competition and specializes in coordinating all defensive positions within the football program.

Reports to: Head Football Coach

Supervises: None

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Assist the Head Coach with instructing players on the rules, regulations, equipment, and techniques of the sport
  • Organize and direct individual and small group practice activities/exercises as directed by the head coach
  • Assess players' skills, monitor players during competition and practice, and keep the head coach informed of the athletic performance of students
  • Report student concerns to the Head Coach
  • Assist with determining game strategy
  • Assist the Head Coach with supervising athletes during practices and competition
  • Follow established procedures in the event of an athlete's injury
  • Model good sportsmanship in behavior maintains appropriate conduct towards players, officials, and spectators
  • Maintain the equipment room in an orderly condition and assume responsibility for its security
  • Distribute equipment, supplies, and uniforms to students as directed by the head coach
  • Assist the Head Coach with end-of-season awards
  • Participate in special activities including parent's night, banquets, award nights, and pep assemblies
  • Perform support tasks such as distributing and maintaining eligibility forms, emergency data cards, and other related records
  • May drive students to away games; assure student transportation procedures are followed

ADDITIONAL DUTIES

  • Maintain required coaching certifications
  • Other duties as assigned by the supervisor or administrator
  • Attend staff development meetings, clinics, and other professional activities to improve coaching performance

Education

High School

Experience

Experience as an assistant coach or varsity player at the high school or college level preferred, or any satisfactory combination of education, experience, and training that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties listed

LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, AND CLEARANCES

  • Cleared Background/Fingerprint check
  • Valid CPR and First Aid certifications
  • Cleared TB assessment
  • Completion of Ministry Safe Training
  • Valid CA Driver's License
  • NFHS Fundamentals of Coaching Certificate
  • NFHS Concussion in Sports Certificate
  • NFHS Heat Illness Prevention Certificate
  • NFHS Sudden Cardiac Arrest Certificate

PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

  • Exhibit the highest level of Christian integrity in his/her life reflects Christ-like morals, behavior, attitude, and leadership
  • Ability to articulate their Christian faith
  • An active member of a Christian church; the Missouri Synod preferred
  • Support the Mission and Statement of Faith or Orange Lutheran High School

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • The employee is frequently required to stand for extended periods, speak clearly, hear accurately, and move about the campus, gymnasium, or athletic field
  • The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms; use hands to finger, handle or feel objects or controls, and smell
  • The employee must occasionally lift push, or pull up to 50 pounds, bend, stoop, sit on the floor, climb stairs, squat, kneel, twist, or bend
  • Specific vision abilities include near and far vision within the normal range, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • The typical working environment is in an indoor school classroom, gymnasium, locker room, or outdoor athletic facility with exposure to varying climatic conditions.
  • Duties may occasionally be performed on field trips away from school with varying conditions
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, but may occasionally be loud
