Assistant Director, Student Health & Wellness Support

Full-Time. This is a 35/hr week position, with time shared between Academic and Student Experience (ASEC) member institutions, which currently include Union Theological Seminary (UTS) and Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School. The role is designed to be hybrid, with 5-10 days/month in-person at Union Theological Seminary’s Morningside Heights (Manhattan, NYC) campus and 5-10 days/year in-person visits (travel covered) to Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School (Rochester, NY) and potentially other regional institutions in northeast and/or Mid-Atlantic.

*Seminary offices are normally open from 9:00 AM until 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday. However, because of the nature of the responsibility to the student body, individual offices or departments may have operating hours that extend beyond this period and may include evening or weekend hours. Exempt employees will typically work 35 hours per week and some additional time as may be reasonably required to fulfill the obligations of their position description. Such additional work may include evenings and weekends.

Compensation:
$65,000 plus full benefits. This is a three-year grant-funded position with the possibility of renewal.

Job Summary:

The Assistant Director, Student Health & Wellness Support will promote the emotional, mental, physical, financial, and nutritional well-being of graduate theological students by developing and coordinating programs, procuring and curating services, collaborating and engaging with campus and community resources, and providing direct support and case management. This role will support all students at Academic and Student Experience Collaborative (ASEC) member and affiliate institutions. This position serves as the lead Student Health and Wellness Support professional and reports to the senior student affairs officials at those institutions.

Key Responsibilities:

(50%) Case Management

Provides case management and ensures ongoing support to students, provides follow-up for referrals and resources, and fosters student self-advocacy to help students manage and thrive in their emotional, mental, physical, financial, and nutritional responsibilities.

● Manage and triage all student wellness cases and ensure ongoing support to students, providing follow-up for referrals and resources, and fostering student self-advocacy to help students better manage and thrive.

● Leverage existing technologies and identify additional technologies that support student wellness.

● Manage individual case management and assessment to identify both immediate and long-term needs, rights, options, and appropriate referrals for students.

● Meet individually with students, as needed, to provide support and referrals to resources and services. This may include but is not limited to students experiencing roommate conflicts, assistance with basic necessities needs, and mental health concerns.

● Provide timely follow-up with students to ensure they have ongoing support and are engaging with referrals and resources.

● Be available when needed to provide added support during emergency or critical situations. This may include reporting to campus, hospital emergency departments, or other sites on short notice to respond to incidents.

● Support with the development and implementation of emergency response processes for emergencies and crisis intervention on campus. Provide feedback and recommendations for process improvement.

● Work collaboratively with other departments and campus and community organizations and providers to coordinate and promote wellness events and activities

● Serve as a liaison between graduate students and university administration at and across institutions on issues related to wellness

(35%) Programming, Communication, & Coordination

● Develop and implement evidence-based wellness programs and initiatives to promote the emotional, mental, physical, and spiritual well-being of graduate students.

● Conduct outreach and marketing efforts as well as develop and maintain web resources to promote wellness services to graduate students

● Coordinate with diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (and related initiatives at institutions) to create intersectional wellness programming related to individual student identities.

● Coordinate with accessibility services (and related initiatives at institutions) to coordinate and promote student wellness events and activities

● Evaluate student wellness services and identify ways to further strengthen student wellness

● Assist with school- and university-wide events and programs.

(15%) Vendor/External Support Management

● Oversee and coordinate third-party student wellness resources, including tele-counseling providers, as well as on-campus care, student support, and accessibility services

● Conduct assessments and evaluations of third-party wellness resources, programs, and initiatives to determine their effectiveness and make recommendations for change, continuation, and improvement.

Required Qualifications:

● Master's degree in counseling, psychology, social work, or a related field; preference for licensed clinicians with HIPAA certification.

● At least two years of experience working in a clinical care or wellness-related role with college students or workplace settings.

● Demonstrated awareness and understanding of FERPA, Clery Act, HECMA standards, and other issues and standards pertaining to case management in a higher education setting.

● Demonstrated experience developing and implementing evidence-based wellness programs and initiatives.

● Experience with peer education or wellness coaching programs.

● Strong interpersonal, communication, and collaboration skills.

● Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

● Understanding of issues and challenges facing graduate students as well as the nature and function of higher education institutions; familiarity with theological education and online education preferred

● Strong computer literacy/proficiency required; an understanding and appreciation of student services database software and online resources, and the willingness and enthusiasm to respond to the needs of students in an increasingly technologically-oriented society.

The Academic and Student Experience Collaborative (ASEC) is an initiative to enhance the student experience in a financially sustainable way across small, independent higher education institutions. ASEC focuses on five particular components of student success: disability services and accessibility; financial education; career development and services; international student services; and coaching and mental health services. Launched in 2023 and funded by a Lilly Endowment Pathways for Tomorrow grant, ASEC is administratively housed at Union Theological Seminary (UTS) but jointly led by the chief student affairs officials at member institutions. Current ASEC governing members are Union Theological Seminary (UTS) and Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School (CRCDS). As ASEC evolves, additional member and affiliate institutions will be added.
