Department SummaryThe division of University Communications (UC) is charged with telling the University of Oregon's (UO) stories to a broad range of audiences and positioning the university to succeed and thrive. The division utilizes and manages a comprehensive suite of communications tools, including public relations, branding, advertising, licensing, digital media, and more for the benefit of the university.
Position SummaryThe Assistant Director of Social Media and Student Employment (Assistant Director) develops and implements the Social Media strategy for University Communications. As a member of the UC Marketing and Brand Strategy (MBS) team, the Assistant Director reports to the Director of Social Media and Brand Strategy.
The Assistant Director will lead Social Media campaigns directed at prospective and current students, parents and families, alumni, donors and prospective donors, faculty and staff, and other audiences identified as a priority for the institution. The Assistant Director will champion the university's Social Media content development. This position will work independently to create concepts, develop content, publish posts, and evaluate content performance. These are critical responsibilities as the university's Social Media content performance directly demonstrates and influences the institution's reputation and achievement of goals related to recruitment, retention, and philanthropy, among others.
The Assistant Director also provides guidance to Social Media and communications teams across the institution on Social Media strategy and implementation in partnership with the Director.
The Assistant Director will supervise student employees and mentor them to help support the execution of Social Media campaigns and other marketing and brand strategy projects.
Bachelor's degree in journalism, communication, marketing, the arts, or a closely related field; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Two years of professional experience executing digital communications projects, which can include but is not limited to writing web content; creating and updating webpages; graphic design, photography, and videography for online media; and developing strategic communications priorities for an organization or business.
Ability to create and manage communications plans and strategies.
Ability to work across communication and marketing verticals including writing, photo, and video production, design, Social Media, and client management.
Ability to supervise and mentor student employees.
Development, implementation, and leadership of project management systems and workflows.
Knowledge of web analytics tools, preferably Google Analytics and Google Webmaster tools.
Expert editing skills using Drupal and/or WordPress; and thorough knowledge of AP and Chicago style.
Expert knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite.
Ability to interact, communicate, and work effectively with individuals, recognizing and respecting the many and varied identities of each person.
Commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity, equity, and inclusion.
At least one year of professional or student experience shooting and editing video content for Social Media platforms.
At least one year of professional experience working in communications for higher education, nonprofits, or similar field.
At least one year of professional experience supervising or mentoring student employees.
