Position Details
The Assistant Resident Director (ARD) is an employee of Residential Education, a unit of University Housing & Dining Services (UHDS). Supervised by a Resident Director, the ARD is responsible for supporting a Resident Director in overseeing a residence hall and leading the student staff team to accomplish the objectives of Residential Education and UHDS in creating and maintaining an effective living-learning community within the residence halls and dining centers. The position requires a positive attitude towards their work responsibilities as well as Residential Education, UHDS, and its mission. Overall job effectiveness is tied to the ARD’s ability to establish and maintain credibility and good rapport with residents, the student staff team, and university faculty and staff.

Supervision & Leadership
- Assist with the supervision, training, and evaluation of the student staff team within a designated residence hall, including the Resident Assistants, a Diversity Learning Assistant, and an Academic Learning Assistant (5 -7 staff members).
- Develop close working relationships with student staff members, treating them with courtesy, respect, and consideration.
- Meet one-on-one with hall staff members at least once every other week.
- Meet collectively with the student staff team at least once a week.
- Provide ongoing job performance and other feedback to the student staff.
- Assist with orientation and training of Residence Hall Staff.
- Participate in the recruitment and selection processes for Residential Education and their respective community.
- In consultation with supervisor – establish objectives for and provide guidance and assistance to the Residence Hall Staff.
- In consultation with supervisor – coordinate and ensure participation in ‘in-service’ training for Residence Hall Staff. In consultation with supervisor – coordinate training sessions in skills areas (such as leadership, assertiveness, mediation, negotiation, diversity awareness) for student staff to enhance their performance.
- Participate in Residential Education Staff meetings, departmental training sessions, planning sessions, and other meetings – as directed by supervisor and as class schedule allows.
- Execute and support the Community Development Plan as directed by your supervisor, including but not limited to engaging in role modeling, having individual conversations with residents, planning community connections, creating bulletin boards and door decorations, promoting and upholding community living expectations, and implementing hall specific educational programing.
- Assist the Resident Director in setting community development goals for each academic term.
- Serve as a resource and consultant to residential staff in developing and maintaining connections with their floor, wing, and student leadership groups.
- Ensure that the student staff team develop and exercise skill in the establishment of a sense of community at the floor and hall levels.
- Role model academic success and engagement through resident interactions.
- Promote academic initiatives in the community and refer residents to academic resources.
- Promote and role model the values of social justice, equity, and inclusion.
- Support and meet the needs of all historically underrepresented student(s) (e.g., international, Muslim, LGBT students, and others) and assist student staff to do the same.
- Recruit student leaders to represent their peers to community, departmental, and campus leadership.
- Promote, attend, and support initiatives by other UHDS staff, Residence Hall Association (RHA), National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH), and Area Councils.
- Support and promote health and wellness strategies for yourself and the residents in your community.
- Help keep hall facilities functional for the use of all residents, present and future.
- Create and maintain strong positive relationships with the community, treating residents with courtesy, respect, and consideration.
- Assist in promoting good morale and constructive attitudes with residents.
- Be aware of student community issues, needs, and concerns through general contacts with students, student leaders (RHA, Area Council, e.g.), and staff members.
- Develop and maintain positive relationships with hall residents in order to be an approachable and credible leader and resource person.
- Understand, abide by, and philosophically support the guidelines for student behavior in the UHDS Policy Guide and the OSU Code of Student Conduct, role modeling appropriate behavior at all times.
- Serve in on-call duty rotation for weeknights and weekends throughout the school year.
- Confront and report potential policy violations and behavior that is disruptive to the community.
- Communicate any incidents and student concerns to supervisor.
- Understand and implement emergency response protocol and procedures.
- Communicate with the professional staff member on call during crisis response.
- Refer students to appropriate support services as needed.
- Provide duty and desk coverage as assigned.
- Be alert to early signs of potential problems and work with other residential staff to institute preventive and remedial measures.
- Ensure that appropriate follow-up conversations take place with students who go through the UHDS and/or University Conduct process, expressing care, support, or concern as needed.
- Educate the residence hall community about university policies and regulations, assisting students with developing strategies on how to respond to conflict, safety practices, and the appropriate action to take in the event of an emergency.
- Schedule RA on duty rotation with the supervision and input of the RD.
- Coach and train student staff in their interactions with students who may be violating university policies and regulations.
- Work with student staff to mediate and/or help resolve roommate or suitemate issues directly.
- Check-in on students who have experienced crisis, provide resources, and refer to other offices to provide continued support to the students.
- Act as resource person and referral agent for University and community agencies and programs that assist students with personal, academic, and career goals and interests.
- Be thoroughly familiar with policies in the Residential Education Handbook, the University’s "Student Conduct Regulations’, and the Housing contract.
- Be present and take a leadership role in pre-service training program sessions held during and prior to Fall Term, departmental in-services, and other scheduled training events.
- Be present and take a leadership role in Hall transitions.
- Follow all protocols related to inventory, damage, billing, keys, fire safety, and building security. Assist students with their housing-related problems as appropriate.
- Assist in the coordination of hall room change process as directed.
- Maintain administrative recordkeeping as assigned and in a timely manner, including but not limited to roommate agreements, incident reports, Integrated Pest Management Reports, duty logs, and resident interactions.
- Perform administrative tasks as assigned including but not limited to checking staff mailboxes, completing bulletin boards, and displaying hall signage, flyers, and program advertisements.
- Assist RD with documenting and reconciling budget expenditures as directed.
- Assist with the recruitment and selection of new student staff members.
- Participate in all trainings and orientations.
- Facilitate University assessment activities as required.
- Attend and participate in a weekly staff meeting, regular meetings with your supervisor, and any other assigned meetings as directed.
- Maintain timely communication with supervisor and other staff, including responding to emails, phone calls, and other forms of communication.
- Check out items to residents at the front desk.
- Set up an organization system at the desk to include checking out items to residents and inventorying and requesting supplies as needed.
- Represent Residential Education and UHDS at university programs and events as directed.
- Work as support staff during campus and/or UHDS programing including but not limited to: University programs, Second Year and Above Kick Off, and OSU Welcome events.
- Participate in Hall transitions including room inspections, building cleaning, leading health and safety room checks, and student staff checkout as assigned by the Resident Director. This often requires ARD staff to be the last live-in staff to leave their buildings.
- Complete other tasks and duties as assigned.
- Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
- Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
- Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard
- High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program
- Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
- Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*
- Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
- Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*
- International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered “full-time” by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.
- Be a current full time OSU student or degree partnership student with OSU with a cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.5 or higher.
- Maintain good academic and conduct standing with both OSU and UHDS.
- Successfully pass a Criminal History Check upon hire.
- Demonstrate understanding of social justice principles and concepts.
- Experience developing and supporting a community of university students
- Demonstrated ability to plan and implement social, community building, and/or educational programs, activities, or events.
- Demonstrate the ability to manage conflict and engage in difficult conversations with students and staff.
- Demonstrate the ability to balance multiple priorities through effective time management.
This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per OSU Standard 576-055-0000 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.
- Bachelor’s degree, with a preference for those enrolled and in a Graduate Program at Oregon State University.
- Experience working within university housing & residence life as a live-in student staff member.
- Demonstrated commitment to promoting diversity and advocating for social justice issues on campus or in the community.
- Demonstrate crisis management skills.
- Demonstrate prior experience in a leadership role with direct responsibility for guiding or motivating a team to achieve a goal or task.
The ARD position is a one-year student leadership opportunity. The anticipated employment period last for this position includes the full academic year from Monday, August 26, 2024, through Sunday, June 15, 2025.
- The ARD is required to meet full time student status. Given the time commitment needed to complete job responsibilities, enrolling in more than 16 credit hours requires prior approval from your supervisor.
- All UHDS student staff members are expected to stay in good academic standing (2.5 term and cumulative GPA or higher) with Oregon State University. Failure to do so may result in employment warning, probation, or removal from the position.
- The ARD is required to successfully complete required training sessions, including in-person trainings prior to the start of each term, supplemental trainings during the academic year, and online trainings.
- Fall Training may begin as early as August 26, 2024 and lasts until first day of classes on September 25, 2024. The ARD is expected to participate in fall training in its entirety. Students interested in taking summer courses will be expected to plan their schedule around all training sessions.
- Winter Training may begin as early as January 3, 2024 and may last throughout the winter term during regular schedule staff meetings. Students should expect to return early from winter break to participate in winter training sessions and duty.
- UHDS live-in student staff may not schedule classes or other commitments on Tuesday evenings from 5:30-9:00 pm to allow for team meetings and in-service training sessions. If a class during this time is absolutely needed to complete graduation requirements, please consult with your supervisor as soon as possible for approval.
- The ARD may be assigned to duty shifts while classes are not in session, and on holidays when OSU is closed (Thanksgiving Break, Winter Break, Spring Break, etc).
- The ARD is expected to be present for University Move-In days in the Fall, Winter, and Spring term.
- The ARD is expected to be available for hall transition and closings at the end of each term. Staff should expect to stay on campus until noon on the Saturday after finals for Fall and Winter Terms, and may be asked to stay as late as noon on Sunday after Spring Term finals.

WORKINGCONDITIONS
- Addressing high-level medical and emergency situations.
- Experiencing periods of high stress when responding to student crises with a potential to cause secondary traumatic stress.
- Communicating with members of the OSU community and the public, some of whom may be antagonistic or argumentative.
