Job Description


Assistant Director, Residential Life, Division of Student Affairs

The mission of the Office of Residential Life is to create safe, inclusive, and well maintained living communities. We engage our community members in opportunities to develop spiritually, socially, and academically in the Jesuit, Catholic tradition of the University. Under the leadership of the Associate Vice President, Director of Residential Education, and Director of Operations, the department consists of 40 professional staff members, 24 graduate positions, 192 resident assistants, and additional student employees.
Basic Function and Responsibility
The Assistant Director of Residential Life is a 12‐month, live‐off, full‐time professional staff member, responsible for between three and six residential communities. The Assistant Director oversees all educational, social, and operational activities, provides support services directly to primarily undergraduate, residential students in their assigned area, and serves as student conduct case manager for the area in collaboration with an Associate Director of Student Conduct. The AD directly supervises between 3 and 6 Resident Directors (RDs), and indirectly supervises 50-90 Resident Assistants (RAs) and up to 8 graduate assistants. The Assistant Director strives to create a safe and inclusive environment for all students by modeling the values of a Jesuit Catholic institution, with a special commitment to diversity and social justice. Successful candidates will be administratively strong, culturally competent, possess a Master’s degree, and have prior residence life or related student affairs experience.

Staff Supervision

The Assistant Director will receive direct supervision from the Director of Residential Education, and functional supervision from multiple Assistant or Associate Directors, or the Associate Vice President of Residential Life. The Assistant Director is responsible for the following staff supervision in their area:

  • Meets with each professional staff member in their area individually on a regular basis.
  • Plans and conducts area meetings on a bi-weekly basis.
  • Assists in the selection and training of undergraduate and graduate staff.
  • Plans and implements staff development programs for their area.
  • Advises staff on appropriate staff, student, and floor interventions.
  • Addresses concerning trends or behavior, as well as recognizes positive efforts.

Student Development/Community Standards

The Assistant Director is responsible for the following aspects of student development in their area:

  • Reviews and assigns all conduct cases related to students in their assigned area utilizing Maxient.
  • Serves as a Conduct Hearing Officer for violations of university policy.
  • Provides professional direction to staff and students, making referrals when appropriate.
  • Nurtures relationships with their Campus Ministry representatives (Graduate or Resident Ministers).
  • Engages staff on current events including topics of diversity and social justice, and being a productive community member.
  • Intentional interactions and conversations with staff and students.

Operations

The Assistant Director is responsible for the following aspects of operations in their area:

  • Will maintain a proper budget and budget tracking system for the area.
  • Assists with the coordination of opening and closing of their communities.
  • Coordinates follow-up for all maintenance and housekeeping concerns/requests through, and with, the facilities team.
  • Conducts walk-throughs of community with staff.
  • Maintains regular office hours Monday through Friday and will periodically work on nights and weekends for essential responsibilities throughout the year.
  • Facilitates serious roommate issues with professional staff.
  • Works with the Assistant Director of Housing Assignments & Occupancy to ensure proper occupancy records and reports utilizing StarRez.

On-Call Responsibilities

The Assistant Director is responsible for the following aspects of crisis response while on duty:

  • Participates in the university crisis response duty rotation as a Senior Administrator on-Call (SAOC). When on duty the AD is expected to provide direction and clarification for duty team, respond to crisis, both on campus and in the surrounding neighborhood, and ensure staff and students comply with our policies and response guidelines, including during non-business and weekend hours.
  • Responds to students and parents/guardians on Residential Life issues or concerns.
  • Assists with duty during sporting and special events which may be on weekends or in the evening hours.
  • Acts as a liaison with Boston College Police Department, University Counseling Services, the Primary Care Center, faculty, Dean of Students and other University offices during emergencies.

Department and University Relations

The Assistant Director participates in the following department and university relations:

  • Serves on and takes the lead on departmental committees, and may have an opportunity to serve on division or university-wide committees.
  • Attends department and other staff meetings, in-service training programs, and one-on-one meetings.
  • Acts as a liaison with faculty, the Jesuit community, and other university offices.
  • Assists with the implementation of university and departmental goals and objectives, and other duties as assigned.

Full-Time Equivalent Hiring Range: $61,650 to $77,050; salary commensurate with relevant experience.


Requirements

  • A Master’s degree in Higher Education, Student Personnel, Counseling, or related field is strongly preferred; Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Minimum of three full time years of post-graduate residence hall or related student affairs experience.
  • Openness to Jesuit values and mission and the traditions and heritage of Boston College.

  • Demonstrated understanding of student development theory.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
