Position Summary

The Assistant Director position is part of the Undergraduate Admissions team, focused on helping the University meet its goals of enrolling a talented and diverse student body. This position is responsible for the recruitment, evaluation, selection, and yield of applicants.
Duties include leading, managing, organizing, and staffing recruitment events and programs; interviewing students; providing counseling and service to students and families about the University and the college decision process; reviewing and evaluating applications to render admission decisions; and developing and maintaining relationships with school counselors and others. This position represents the University and office internally and externally.
This Assistant Director position also supports the efforts of the Student Financial Services (SFS) team. The Assistant Director will be dual-trained as an SFS staff member and available to give detailed information about completing financial aid documents such as the FAFSA, CSS-Profile, and the awarding of financial aid at highly selective colleges to a variety of constituencies, including public-facing presentations. This position will also assist in providing early financial aid estimates and communicating components of aid offers to first year students.
Strong professional judgment, initiative, flexibility, and a collaborative mindset are required.

 

Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

Recruitment Management 

  • Manage recruitment territory that involves interacting with students, parents, and counselors at high school visits, college fairs, panels, and college recruitment.
  • Work closely with high school counselors and Community Based Organizations (CBOs) to develop strong relationships for the University.
  • Excellent communication skills and knowledge about the University, St. Louis, and admissions are critical.
  • Must maintain a professional demeanor at all times as a representative of the University. 

Application Evaluation and Selection Process 

  • Review and evaluate applications and participate on committees to make admissions recommendations and decisions aligned with institutional goals.
  • Confidentiality and thoughtful consideration of applicants are a must.
  • Must have the ability to work independently following admissions guidelines; lead and participate in discussions and decision-making processes; keep pace with reading expectations; and meet all deadlines throughout the reading season.  

Service 

  • Conduct information sessions about the University, Admissions, and Financial Aid for prospective students and families.
  • Provide customer service by answering phone calls and emails from prospective students and parents.
  • Interview prospective students who visit campus.
  • Answer questions about the University, admissions, financial aid and St. Louis.  
  • Work with faculty, deans, and representatives from other departments at the University to support recruitment and enrollment efforts. Must be able to make mature decisions and recommendations. 

Student Financial Services Recruitment Support 

  • Assist in financial aid related work to support students through the investigation, application, and yield of diverse 1st year students. This will include reviewing financial aid files, providing early estimates to students, communicating information about aid offers to students, and presenting to students, families, and counselors throughout the process. 

 

Other duties as assigned. 

 

Working Conditions

  • The position will be located in an open office environment.
  • As conditions merit, this position may be required to work remotely.
  • Travel and attendance at many events on and off campus is necessary, which may include international travel.
  • Travel expectation is six to eight weeks per year.
  • Must transport recruitment materials to high school visits, college fairs, and group meetings.
  • Work outside of normal business hours is necessary throughout the year.
  • Position requires heavy use of the computer including an electronic application reading system in the office and at home. 
  • Ability to lift/move up to 20 lbs.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • One to three years of higher education or related experience, preference given to admissions or financial aid. 
  • Experience using Microsoft Office, Word, and Excel strongly preferred.
  • Previous presentation experience. 
  • Previous project management experience. 
  • Native or near-native fluency in Spanish. Candidates indicating this level of Spanish proficiency on a resume should be ready to engage with parents of prospective students on topics relating to college and financial aid applications. Candidates noting this level of skill should be prepared to engage in at least one Spanish-language meeting with a native-level speaker during our interview process.  
  • Experience working with diverse populations. 
  • Strong oral and written communication skills. 
  • Excellent decision-making skills, strong judgment when communicating with prospective students and public. 
  • Strong organizational skills. 
  • Willingness to work hard, strong team player, positive attitude. 
  • Ability to take initiative for projects and improvement. 
  • Ability to work outside of standard University work hours. 
  • Ability to travel (anticipated time commitment 6-8 weeks). 
  • Strong attention to detail. 
  • Strong communication skills. 
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. 
  • Ability to balance many tasks. 
  • Must be able to work independently. 
  • Ability to interpret data, detail orientation, in addition to being able to see the “big picture". 

 

Required Qualifications

BS/BA degree required.

G08

 

Salary Range

$40,500.00 - $67,000.00 / Annually

 

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
