Harris-Stowe State University is a historically Black institution (HBCU) located in the heart of vibrant mid-town St. Louis, Missouri. Harris-Stowe’s beautiful campus is minutes from the renown Gateway Arch, St. Louis Zoo, St. Louis Art and History Museums, Forest Park and other cultural and educational institutions. Job Summary

The primary responsibility of the Assistant Director for Inclusive Excellenceand Campus Cultureis to assist the Executive Director in cultivating a more inclusive and engaged Campus Culture that produces positive outcomes for our first and second-year students to increase retention, persistence, and completion rates. The Assistant Director will work in a two-year cycle with incoming Bridge/First-year (FYE) students through their second-year (SYE) completion and transition back to the Bridge Academy to develop a new group for two full academic years. The Assistant Director will collaborate with the Executive Director to coordinate New Student Orientation and the Fall Convocation.


Essential Functions

  • Provides leadership and oversight for the implementation of the First and Second Year Experience Program, including leadership over the Bridge Academy, first-year seminars, and the Hornet Success Program
  • Coordinates FYE and SYE program organization, scheduling, implementation, and evaluation
  • Collaborates with Executive Director on the facilitation of New Student Orientation and planning the Fall Convocation.
  • Manages a caseload of Bridge/FYE and SYE students to ensure appropriate educational planning and academic support is in place
  • Collaborates and coordinates with Academic Success, Academic Resource Center, TRiO Student Support Services, Student Affairs, and Career Engagement to ensure appropriate academic services and co-curricular opportunities are provided
  • Collaborates with appropriate departments to develop, implement, oversee, supervise, and promote the Peer Mentor Program.
  • Coordinates evaluation services, including assessment, data collection, and analysis
  • Supervises and conducts performance evaluations of student mentors
  • Participates in monthly meetings with other key student success team members and serves on university committees.
  • Completes and submits required annual program reviews and Annual Performance Reports for Title III
  • Represents and communicates the Inclusive Excellence and Campus Culture initiatives to the campus community
  • Perform additional duties as assigned based on the needs of the university.


Minimum Education and Experience

  • Must possess a minimum of a Master’s degree in Education, Psychology, Student Affairs, or related field.
  • Minimum three years of experience with program development, teaching, or higher education preferred
  • Strong verbal and written skills
  • Computer literacy and proficiency in MS Office, Excel, internet, and effective use of social media outlets
  • The ability to multi-task and attention to detail is essential.

  • Must have the ability to respond effectively to the needs of a diverse and demanding student population.
  • Must be a self-starter who works well in a fast-paced, dynamic, team-oriented and culturally diverse environment;

  • Demonstrated ability to organize, implement and facilitate workshop, programs and informational presentations.
  • Demonstrated ability to build rapport in developing meaningful relationships with students and colleagues.
  • Ability to demonstrate ownership, accountability and teamwork.
  • Ability to focus on results and to commit to excellence.

Physical Requirements:

  • May be susceptible to eyestrain, back discomfort, and hand/wrist problems due to long periods working on a computer.
  • Occasional stress may occur from volume and deadlines.
  • Demands normal manual dexterity and visual and auditory acuity.
  • Must be mobile throughout the campus.
  • May be some walking, standing, bending or carrying light items.


Working Conditions and Environment:

  • Work is routinely performed in a typical interior/office environment
  • Very limited or no exposure to physical risk
