Position Summary
This position provides leadership and performs organizational duties to assure the successful operation of, and mitigation of risk for, a comprehensive collegiate Fitness Program, including but not limited to, weight and cardio spaces, Personal Training, Group Fitness and Small Group Instruction Programs. This Assistant Director is to conduct activity programming; personnel recruitment, hiring, training, and evaluating graduate and undergraduate personnel; student development and assessment; budget development and administration; interpretation and application of university policies and procedures; This position is responsible for staying current with industry norms, in addition to providing and maintaining inclusive and innovative programs, services, and facilities as it pertains to their area. Collaboration with colleges and departments throughout Academic Affairs, Student Life and Wellbeing, Athletics, and Business and Finance; and participation in and promotion of Campus Recreation & Wellness programs, activities, and events. Identify trends in fitness programs, equipment and environment. Purchase, evaluate and maintain fitness equipment integrity and functionality. Provide Leadership for Campus Recreation student staff and help develop student success opportunities.

supervise and evaluate Weight Room Supervisors. Work with equipment vendors and Fitness Center staff to maintain fitness equipment inventory in safe, working condition; and replace when necessary. Recruit, develop, supervise and evaluate a Graduate Assistant.

Exercise personnel. Maintain the appearance, condition, and inventory of all departmental Group Exercise associated equipment and areas. Replace group exercise equipment as necessary.

Complete departmental administrative duties including reports, budgets, purchasing, and statistics. Participate in programs and services offered through Campus Recreation & Wellness.

Required and Preferred Qualifications
Required Education
Bachelor's degree in exercise science, Physical Ed, Recreation Administration, Sports Management, Student Affairs, or related field.
Required Experience
Minimum of two years administrative experience in the fitness/wellness industry. (NOTE: 2 years Graduate Assistantship = 1-year full-time experience); Supervisory experience of part-time or full-time staff.
Required License/Certification
CPR w/AED and First Aid Instructor certified or certified shortly after time of hire.
Must have one of the following certifications by the date of hire: Group Fitness Instructor thru an accredited program such as ACE, AFAA, and IDEA or nationally recognized Personal Training Certification (ACE, ACSM, NASM, NSCA, etc.)

Preferred Experience
  • At least one year working in a collegiate campus recreation setting. Affiliation with NIRSA
  • Experience with Fusion software
  • Experience in the development and promotion of a group fitness schedule
