Summary of Responsibilities : Assists the head coach of a sport with overall management, with the main responsibility being the teaching of student-athletes in games, practices, and film sessions. Similarly, the Assistant Coach is responsible for helping the head coach to develop a consistently competitive program through teaching of student-athletes, in which, the team can contend for conference championships on a regular basis. In addition to instructing student athletes in how to perform their sport, the Assistant Coach will also provide instruction on physical health and well-being, team concepts, and safety.
This person will help the head coach in the recruitment and retention of a full roster of players, as well as assist admissions in recruiting prospective students who express interest in participating in varsity sports. The Assistant Coach will also mentor student-athletes to the end that they grow athletically, academically, and spiritually throughout their college experience. Additional responsibilities will include retention, counseling, and performing other necessary activities related to intercollegiate athletic competitions.
Essential Responsibilities : (These essential responsibilities are those the individual must be able to perform unaided or with the assistance of reasonable accommodation.) Coaches all aspects of the assigned sport to include but not limited to: Maintains up-do-date knowledge of, and compliance with, Geneva College, NCAA Division III and the Presidents Athletic Conference rules and regulations. Helps to organize and conduct practices and conditioning sessions. Assists the head coach in scouting reports and film breakdown.
Travel with the team to away contests and neutral site tournaments. Model Christian attitudes and behaviors for student-athletes, students, staff, and fans. Demonstrates concern for the spiritual, academic, physical, and emotional well-being of each team member.
Actively encourages and supports the Christian faith of team members, which includes encouraging them in spiritual disciplines such as church attendance, prayer, and Bible study. In the case of non-Christian team members, encourages them to consider the claims of Christ on their lives. Actively encourages and supports team members on the importance of academic success by encouraging or ensuring regular class attendance, monitoring grades, and working to minimize conflicts between athletic and academic responsibilities.
Actively encourages and supports the physical well-being of team members by working with the training staff and other appropriate medical personnel to ensure that the student-athletes are physically ready to participate. This includes looking for signs of eating disorders or the use of illegal and/or unhealthful drugs and supplements and taking appropriate preventive measures and establishing healthy workout and practice schedules. Actively encourages and supports the psychological and emotional well-being of team members, provides appropriate mentoring and life guidance, and seeks professional assistance when circumstances warrant.
Recruitment: Assists the head coach in recruiting student-athletes in line with College policy, NCAA Division III, and PAC regulations. Works closely with the admissions department to this end. Financial Management: Adheres to budget guidelines and keeps records and writes reports.
Ensures safe and cost-effective travel to and from contests. Other: Actively participates in athletic department functions and meetings, and in college committees as assigned. Maintains effective working relationships with administrative staff, coaches, student-athletes, and other staff.
Performs related duties as assigned. Supervision: Supervises regular and student employees to include interviewing, hiring, training, planning, assigning, and directing work, coaching, appraising performance, rewarding, and disciplining employees, addressing complaints, and resolving problems. Must have a mindset of mentoring employees under supervision.
