Job description

Under the general direction of the Director and the Chief of the Division of Petroleum Market Oversight (DPMO), the Attorney Supervisor functions as the Assistant Chief and works with a high level of independence and supervises the work of two subordinate units, Investigations and Industry Analysis, consisting of lower-level attorneys, investigators, and researchers. The incumbent may assist the CEA Division Chief (Licensed Attorney) in planning, organizing, directing, and coordinating the work of a legal staff; acts for the CEA Division Chief as needed; confers with management on matters of policy and procedure; Incumbents supervise a group of subordinate attorneys who perform a wide variety of legal work, with varying levels of complexity, and independently handle complex and sensitive legal cases.
The incumbent is responsible for the full range of duties of an Attorney Supervisor, including hiring subordinate staff; employee supervision, development, and training; development of strategy and tactics in the most complex disputes or litigation; and formal and informal aspects of the legislative process. The incumbent is also responsible for the administration of work processes and legal program functions relating to DPMO, such as reviewing business documents, contracts, requests, and services, as well as the administration of DPMO policies and procedures and appropriate statutory provisions of applicable California Codes and regulations.
You will be helping to guide a unique "startup" within state government as DPMO is the nation's first independent watchdog dedicated to providing oversight for the oil and gas industry. With the fifth largest economy in the world, California is leading the transition away from fossil fuels. The DPMO will play a critical role in that effort by advising the Governor, the Legislature, and the CEC and providing critical market oversight to ensure that Californians have a reliable supply of safe and affordable transportation fuels.

Working Conditions
The CEC supports a hybrid workplace model with office-based and remote-centered workers. Limited in-person attendance and occasional travel may be required based on the needs of the division. Regular and consistent attendance is essential to successful performance. This position is remote-centered, which means the incumbent works 50 percent or more of their time from an alternate work location.

The California Energy Commission seeks an Attorney Supervisor in the new Division of Petroleum Market Oversight (DPMO).
The CEC was established by the Legislature in 1974 to address energy challenges facing the state. Today, the CEC is the state's primary energy policy and planning agency and is leading the state to a 100% clean energy future. Serving all Californians, the CEC embodies diversity, equity, and inclusion, and has taken an active and meaningful role in creating an environment that enables each employee to thrive. The CEC supports a hybrid workplace model with a workforce of office-based and remote-centered workers. The CEC operates under the umbrella of the California Natural Resources Agency and shares offices with the agency in a LEED Platinum Certified Building in downtown Sacramento.
