The Wisconsin Department of Justice (DOJ) is looking for highly motivated and talented individuals to join our Division of Legal Services as an Assistant Attorney General in the Criminal Appeals Unit.
Headquarters: This position is headquartered at the Risser Justice Center located at 17 West Main Street in Madison.

Position Summary
This position provides a variety of legal services, through counsel and representation, to the Legislature, Governor, state agencies, corporation counsel and district attorneys. This position enforces the statutes under the Attorney General's jurisdiction.
The Criminal Appeals Unit represents the State in appeals of Wisconsin criminal felony convictions. This involves writing appellate briefs on behalf of the State in the Wisconsin Court of Appeals, primarily, as well as in the Wisconsin Supreme Court and federal courts. Attorneys also represent the State in oral arguments in state and federal appellate courts. Beyond felony convictions, the unit occasionally handles appeals of sexual predator commitments, misdemeanor and traffic cases, and juvenile cases. Attorneys in the unit collaborate with each other, with other units in the Department of Justice, and with prosecutors across the State.
Salary Information
The Assistant Attorney General position is in pay schedule 09 and pay range 75. The starting pay will be between $36.00 - $54.00/hour ($74,880 - $112,320 annually). Pay for current or former state employees will follow the provisions found in the State of Wisconsin Compensation Plan. A 12-month probationary period may be required.
Job Details
This position may be eligible to work up to 40% remotely as part of a hybrid schedule, following successful completion of a probationary period of reporting to the headquarters in Madison. Travel to the headquarters is not eligible for travel reimbursement.
High speed internet access is required to meet the needs of remote work.
The Department of Justice does not sponsor work visas at the time of hire or anytime during employment. All persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and complete the required Employment Eligibility Form I-9.
A background check, including fingerprints, will be completed on applicants prior to selection.
Special Qualification: Candidate must be a member in good standing with the Wisconsin State Bar upon appointment.
Qualifications

Minimally qualified applicants must have education, training and/or experience in the following :
  • Writing or drafting briefs or judicial decisions
  • Analyzing statues and/or case law
  • Conducting in-depth legal research
  • Experience or coursework in criminal law
In addition to the minimum qualifications, a well-qualified applicant will have education, training, and/or experience in the following:
  • Writing appellate briefs or arguing before an appellate court
  • Working in a clerkship or for a court at the appellate or federal level
  • Representing a State as a party, or serving as counsel for a government agency, official, or employee as the client
