The position provides for the recognition, prevention and rehabilitation of injuries for 24 NCAA Men’s and Women’s Division I athletic teams. The Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Medicine reports to the Senior Woman Administrator and is responsible for supervising Athletic Trainers, student workers and student interns. The position is a 12-month salaried position. The Assistant Athletic Director of Sports Medicine provides comprehensive medical services to varsity intercollegiate athletic teams as directed by physicians in accordance with the NATA and NCAA guidelines and as assigned by the Athletic Director. All medical services are provided as outlined by the NATA and NCAA. These medical services include prevention of athletic injuries/illnesses, recognition and evaluation of athletic injuries/illness and medical referrals, management/treatment and disposition of athletic injuries/illnesses, rehabilitation and conditioning of injuries/illnesses, organization and administration of Athletic Training programs, and education and counseling of student athletes.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Some of the major responsibilities include:

  • Develop overall Sports Medicine program for the University, including injury prevention programs, injury evaluations, injury management, injury treatment and rehabilitation, educational programs, and counseling for student-athletes.
  • Serve as an active member on the Athletic Department Senior Leadership Team
  • Provide athletic training services for the University’s athletic department, including attendance at scheduled team practices and home and away competitions as necessary.
  • Coordinate and schedule physical examinations and medical referrals for student-athletes to determine their ability to practice and compete.
  • Responsible for the formation of the University’s athletic training staff, including hiring, training, scheduling and supervision of assistant/associate athletic trainers, graduate Assistant Athletic trainers, interns, student athletic trainers and student work study.
  • Manage the Athletic Training Facility including the scheduling of routine maintenance and purchasing of new equipment.  Maintain the facilities physical appearance and overall order. 
  • Work in conjunction with the strength and conditioning and sports nutrition staff to ensure safety in the design and implementation of fitness, nutrition and conditioning programs customized to meet individual student-athlete needs.
  • Maintain up to date computer database of all student-athletes in regard to injuries, rehabilitation and insurance coverage.
  • Provide updates on the progress and status of injured athletes to coaches, parents and the Athletic Administration as needed. 
  • Ensure that all athletes have had medical screening prior to practice or competition and the results are on file in the Athletic Training Facility.
  • Education/enforcement of NCAA rules regarding the medical aspects of sports.
  • Act as department coordinator for substances of abuse education.
  • Oversee annual budget for the Athletic Training Facility and direct the ordering of adequate medical supplies and equipment. 
  • In cooperation with the Assistant Director of Athletic for Facilities make recommendation regarding preventative maintenance athletic fields and protective gear.
  • Act as liaison between medical personnel, the coaching staff, parents and Frederick Health
  • Assure that all varsity student athletes are given the proper emergency medical attention and referral.
  • Train and administer all appropriate personnel in the Mount Athletic Department Emergency Response protocol.  Responsible for the continued development and improvement of the Mount Athletic Department Emergency Response plan.
  • Inform host institutions to arrange for coverage of our teams when a Certified Athletic Trainer is not traveling with the team.
  • Oversee compliance of OSHA regulations as they pertain to blood borne pathogens in the Athletic Training Facility. Provide proper disposal of tissue and bodily fluids in the Athletic Training Facility and on the field of play.
  • Act as site coordinator for on-site NCAA year-round drug testing.
  • Attending all athletic departmental meetings.
  • Coordinate insurance claims with insurance carriers, medical providers and athletes.
  • Oversee the staff’s renewal of MD Board of Physicians licensure.  

 

Job Requirements: Education, Experience and Skills:

Minimum Qualifications:

The appointed individual will:

  • Be NATA certified.
  • Have a Bachelor’s Degree with a Master’s Degree preferred and experience at the college level.
  • Have CPR certification (required).
