Job Summary:
The Area Safety Manager guides company-wide health and safety procedures, coordinating with Safety
Director and VP to develop safety strategies. They oversee compliance, accident management,
inspections, and metric monitoring.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:
- Monitors and maintains Electronic Driver Log Devices (ELDs), Daily Vehicle Inspection Reports (DVIRs), internal and external Fleet
- Management and Tracking Software System, and Video
- Telematics Software (Drive Cams) to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations.
- Coordinates new driver safety orientations, including online safety training, ELDs/HOS/Drive
- Cam training and setup, safety policy and procedures, hazardous waste manifest and placarding training, and Smith System Training.
- Assists with developing and implementing safety training for new employee orientation and annual required programs.
- Assists Compliance Administrator with managing fleet management and tracking software system and video telematics software, and provides compliance advice and assistance to management for state and federal regulations.
- Provides DOT and Hazmat training to drivers and employees.
- Reviews and audits Driver Vehicle Inspection Reports (DVIR) in our fleet management and tracking software system to verify compliance, and provides training to employees and management.
- Performs inspections at each terminal to identify and evaluate hazardous conditions and practices in the workplace, and develops controls for identified hazards.
- Recommends changes to eliminate workplace accidents and injuries and attends Safety Committee meetings.
- Coordinates with the Safety Director to develop and implement Hazardous Material Handling procedures/policies and maintains site-specific policies.
- Conducts safety training for all employees and manages enrollment, auditing, and certification of employee safety training.
Manages Confined Space Entry and Rescue Program and Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) Program, providing initial, annual, and refresher training with affected employees and management.
Other Functions:
- Trains employees on Fall Protection Systems and relevant PPE; ensures functional Fall Protection Systems and inspects equipment.
- Oversees Accident Management process, ensures accountability for preventable accidents, and assigns re-training.
- Trains and recertifies forklift and pallet jack operators, and issues wallet cards.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Biology or Engineering required.
- Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) 30-Hour General Industry Safety Certification (unrestricted).
- 2 - 5 years of experience in Related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience in Safety/DOT/Transportation environment.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of administrative and office procedures and systems such as word processing, managing files and records, stenography and transcription, designing forms, and workplace terminology.
- Knowledge of safety regulations including state, federal, and governmental agencies.
- Works effectively under pressure to meet deadlines.
- Skilled at developing and maintaining good working relationships.
- Ability to plan and execute events, safety meetings, incident review meetings, and safety recognitions.
- Ability to develop, coach, and mentor others including the ability to train and work independently with minimal supervision.
- The ability to analyze and identify risk trends, problems and solutions.
Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety preferred.
