Job description

Summary

The Archaeologist will support all aspects of archaeology and cultural resource investigation and management projects.  This will include planning and performing field work to identify and evaluate potential archaeology artifacts and cultural resources, development of appropriate reports, and testing/application of sites for listing in the National Register.  The position will support small and large field projects.  The Archaeologist will work with the Kuna Environmental team on other related environmental projects as time permits.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  Technical planning and execution of archaeology/cultural resource survey projects

  Testing and review of potentially identified artifacts and locations for listing on the National Register

  Support to clients for the management and compliance with Section 106 NHPA requirements

  Ability to perform field work on remote sites following safe procedures and with minimal oversight

  Provide regulatory support and coordination with local, state, and federal agencies including the Alaska Office of History and Archaeology (OHA). Explains regulatory policies and procedures.

 

Minimum Requirements

  Degree in history, archaeology, anthropology, architecture or related fields.

  At least 1 year of experience working with and under the direction of a qualified archaeologist (according to Department of Interior minimum requirements)

  Experience performing field work and developing project work plans and subsequent reports

  Ability to adapt to and maintain a safety conscious work environment

  Ability to demonstrate, conduct, and conform to a set of values and accepted standards, such as honesty, integrity, reliability, and accountability

  Ability to pay attention to the minute details of a project or task and perform work accurately and thoroughly

  High degree of organization skills and ability to follow a systematic method of performing a task

  Ability to effectively work within a team environment to accomplish work activities, exhibiting a professional demeanor toward co-workers and customers

  Ability to communicate professionally, clearly and concisely with others using both the spoken and written word, as well as the ability to actively listen and comprehend communication from others

 

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

Weather: Indoors/outdoors

Noise level: The noise level in the work environment is usually that of a standard office atmosphere.

Description of primary environment: Office building with standard office environment. Will also be on project sites outside.

Physical requirements:  Employee is required to occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 lbs. Frequently required to sit, stand, walk, use hands/fingers to handle or feel, climb, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, talk/hear, see, taste/smell, and carry weight/lift.

Travel: Periodic (as projects require); field work on remote sites with limited access and camp-type accomodations

 

Travel may require an employee or contractor to pass a TSA security checkpoint.
