Position Summary
The purpose of this position is to manage animal shelter and field operations, supervise staff and volunteers, provide customer service, and organize, plan and implement programs and policies. This is accomplished by having strong people management skills while creating a culture that values servant leadership, teamwork, and exceptional customer service amongst staff and volunteers. In addition, the position will be responsible for training volunteers, implementing new and creative programs and policies that benefit the animals, increase adoptions, providing public education and awareness to citizens, supervising field operations, evaluating animal health and behavior, and processing adoptions and other processes. Other duties include working with rescue groups and related outreach programs, organizing and coordinating Animal Shelter Advisory Committee meetings, and attending workshops and continuing education.

Essential Job Functions
Maintains the interior and exterior of the facility by inspecting and picking up and removing litter and debris, sweeping and edging, inspecting sidewalks, shrubs and interior for safety concerns, and generating cleaning schedules in a manner that is compliant with state regulations.
Supervises staff by assigning daily tasks and verifying completion, holding employees accountable for not meeting expectations, recognizing staff that exceeds expectations, preparing schedules, processing timesheets and leave requests, evaluating behavior of animals, supervising field operations and interacting with citizens, ensuring the center is maintained in an organized and sanitary manner, implementing staff training and ensuring certifications are maintained, and monitoring performance.
Completes animal care duties by maintaining all licenses, drug inventories and records, evaluating animal behavior and health, determining final disposition of animals, scheduling veterinary services, implementing vaccination programs, maintaining records, complying with all local, state and federal statutes, and maintaining all appropriate records.
Enforces local, state and federal animal welfare laws by enforcing mandatory sterilization and rabies agreements, evaluating and enforcing animal and cruelty laws, issuing citations, and minimizing animals at large.
Works with a state mandated Animal Services advisory committee and other citizen groups by scheduling meetings and agendas, answering questions and responding to requests, working with visitors, coordinating with animal welfare groups, coordinating volunteer programs, and representing the shelter to the public.
Education and Experience
Work requires broad knowledge in a general professional or technical field. Knowledge is normally acquired through four years of college resulting in a Bachelor's degree or equivalent.
Five or more years of experience in animal control and/or animal shelter operations is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Work requires supervising and monitoring performance for a regular group of employees or department including providing input on hiring/disciplinary actions and work objectives/effectiveness, performance evaluations, and realigning work as needed.
Recommendations regarding policy development and implementation are made and/or recommended. Evaluates customer satisfaction, develops cooperative associations, and utilizes resources to continuously improve customer satisfaction.
This position normally performs the duty assignment according to his or her own judgment, requesting supervisory assistance only when necessary. Special projects are managed with little oversight and assignments may be reviewed upon completion.
Work requires advanced skills and knowledge in approaches and systems, which affect the design and implementation of major programs and/or processes organization-wide. Independent judgment and decision-making abilities are necessary to apply technical skills effectively.
This position prepares accounting, budget, employment, and/or purchasing documents; and completes research to justify language used in documents for a unit or division of a department. This position may recommend budget allocations.
Advanced ability to read literature, books, reviews, scientific or technical journals, abstracts, financial reports, and/or legal documents. Intermediate ability to deal with system of real numbers, practical application of fractions, percentages, ratios, proportions and measurements. Advanced ability to write editorials, journals, speeches, manuals, or critiques.
Special Requirements:May be required to work evenings, weekends, and occasionally holidays.
Licenses and Certificates:
Valid driver's license with good driving record and ability to maintain while employed.
Basic Animal Control Certification and Euthanasia Certification is required, or must be obtained within 6 months of employment.
Work Environment:
Work includes indoor and outdoor environment, is subject to adverse weather conditions, noise, fumes and odors, and may require working during non-regular working hours. Work requires moderate lifting (up to 75 pounds), bending, standing, and climbing, with potential exposure to diseased animals. Exposure to vicious, rabid domestic and wild animals.
