Job Description
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:
Responsible for all activities required for the proper care and maintenance of research animals maintained in the facilities. All employees are expected to perform their duties as assigned, arrive to work at 7 am and depart at 3:30 pm M-F. You will be required to work on the weekends and holidays as scheduled. The weekend and holiday hours are from 7 am to 12 pm. In addition, you will be expected to work extra hours during emergency situations or if any unexpected situation arises until work is completed.
- Shall oversee the management and husbandry services for the animal care facilities
- Shall have oversight of the vivarium and provide daily direction of husbandry and cage wash duties through the Caretaker and Cage Wash Leads
- Will work directly with customers to ensure vivarium operations are conducted efficiently and with minimum research interruptions
- Shall ensure the daily duties of the animal husbandry staff are performed
- Coordinates all vivarium activities; provides animal care and technical support, as needed; provides assistance to the Project Manager as required; documents and initiates repair requests on an as-needed basis; professional interaction with the customer and fellow staff and emphasizes team building; reviews Standard Operating Procedures as requested; brings discrepancies between operations and SOPs to management's attention and revises as needed; ensures appropriate adherence to all customer SOPs and other technical/administrative directives
- Provide SOP training and reviews current SOPs for functionality; attends customer meetings as requested; assists in the training program for employees to ensure AALAS certifications are obtained in a timely manner; and performs routine inspections of areas of responsibility to ensure compliance with all applicable guidelines
- Provide space management of the Animal Facility holding rooms and updating the management weekly
- Receiving animals in the animal management system, print cage cards and updating census reports
- Assist in the development and maintenance of relationships with representatives of government, military, research, and contract personnel in order to coordinate activities and assist in investigations into matters concerning quality and client complaints
- Assist in personnel matters in collaboration with supervisory staff to include, but not limited to disciplinary issues
- Orders supplies as needed
- Work with the client to provide resolutions to operational issues; maintains a good rapport and professional relationships with the customers and fellow employees and emphasizes team building and cooperation
- Provide staff support for the animal enrichment and behavioral training programs
- Report any abnormal conditions of the animal facilities, or immediate vicinity to appropriate contract, government and/or military personnel
- Participate in interviews and selection of assigned personnel
- Provide weekly and monthly contract and project specific deliverables as specified by the Project Manager
- Communicate daily with Deputy and Project Managers on facility and animal related issues, personnel issues, maintenance updates and project status
- Act in place of the Deputy and/or Project Manager in the event of their absence as assigned
- Must be able to lift a maximum of 50 lbs.; bend, push, pull, stoop, climb and stand for a prolonged period.
- Perform all other duties as assigned by the Project Manager
Requirements:
- Must be certified by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) as a Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) and Certified Manager of Animal Resources (CMAR) desired; have 3 years of supervisory experience in an Animal Facility similar size and scope required
- Must have a solid understanding for all applicable laws and regulations regarding laboratory animal care: for example, The Animal Welfare Act, The Guide, AAALAC accreditation standards and project specific Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), as well as other relevant federal state, local and Department of Defense/Department of the Army regulatory requirements
- Must have experience in managing an Animal Facility with multiple animal species, care and handling, animal behavior, barrier management, hazard containment, and data management
Preferred:
- Knowledgeable of IBM compatible computers, Microsoft Office software, and database systems is preferred
