Under general supervision, care for animals at the Animal Services and Placement Center; feed, water, and bathe the animals; monitor and observe animals for signs of illness or injury and report symptoms to the supervisors; clean and maintain buildings, grounds and public areas at the Center; clean kennels and cages; assist the Animal Control Officers and the public by accepting and retrieving incoming animals; under supervision, assist in euthanasia; stock food and supplies and keep inventory; and perform other related work as assigned. Only the MOST qualified applicants will be selected in the testing process.The following duties are typical for this position. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITY TO:
- Humane treatment of animals.
- Ability to learn proper cleaning methods and the safe usage of cleaning materials, and disinfectants.
- Feed, water, and bath the animals; monitor and observe animals for signs of illness or injury and reports symptoms to the supervisor.
- Clean and maintain buildings, grounds and public areas at the Center.
- Clean kennels and cages.
- Assist the Animal Control Officers and the public by accepting and retrieving incoming animals.
- Process animals for adoption
- Handle the redemption of impounded animals.
- Stock food and Center supplies and keep inventory.
- Clean interior and exterior of Center vehicles.
- Submit work requests for repairs requiring special skills or materials.
- Assist in opening and closing of facilities.
- May assist Animal Control Officers in the field.
- May assist in office duties.
SKILLS:
- Understanding oral and written instructions

- Keeping accurate written records.
- Reading and writing skills sufficient to perform the job duties.
EDUCATION/TRAINING:
- High school graduate or equivalent.
LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE:
- Must possess a valid California Driver's License.

Environment: Work is performed primarily in an office, kennel, and field environment; exposure to a variety of domestic and wild animals; exposure to infectious animal diseases, animal wastes, animal bites, and allergens, and inclement weather conditions; incumbents may be required to work extended hours including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Physical: Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to travel to various locations to pick up and dispose of animals; exert physical strength when handling animals and livestock; ability to humanely restrain animals when necessary; assess medical and behavior changes in animals both visually and audibly; to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; must possess sufficient strength and stamina to lift 70 pounds., carry, push, and/or pull moderate to heavy amounts of weight; to operate office equipment including use of a computer keyboard; to operate assigned equipment and vehicle; and to verbally communicate to exchange information.
WORK SCHEDULE:
- Ability to work overtime, holidays and weekends when necessary or assigned.
