The Nutritional Biochemist will work closely with the NBL lead and other Nutritional Biochemists to provide support and contribute to the ongoing efforts of the Nutritional Biochemistry Laboratory (NBL) at the NASA – Johnson Space Center (JSC). This role is a function of the Human Health and Performance Contract to support spaceflight operations projects along with research studies conducted to advance future exploration missions.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Employ analytical chemistry techniques in the analysis of biological samples
- Manage and interpret data, conduct statistical analyses, and prepare graphical representations of results
- Manage laboratory quality control program, including intra- and inter-laboratory testing for NBL tests and data interpretation
- Prepare experiment documentation and develop new research protocols
- Perform analytical procedures: analyze samples and implement at least 5 analytical methods for Nutritional Biochemistry Laboratory (NBL) projects using basic or complex laboratory instrumentation
- Implement multiple existing and new analytical methods for NBL projects using complex laboratory instrumentation and databases
- Evaluate and develop hardware and methods to address complex operational and experimental protocols
- Prepare and present scientific data and reports for NASA, local, and national meetings
- Document procedures and quality-control methods in conformance with ISO-9000 requirements
- Provide technical support and/or act as a study/project coordinator for major NBL projects and protocols
- Develop new research protocols
- Assist in cost performance of NBL projects
- Contribute to peer-reviewed publications
- Other activities as required by management
REQUIRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Nutrition, Biochemistry, Clinical Chemistry or related field and a minimum of 10 years of experience
OR
- Master’s degree in Nutrition, Biochemistry, Clinical Chemistry or related field and a minimum of 7 years of experience
OR
- Doctorate-level degree in Nutrition, Biochemistry, Clinical Chemistry or related field
Experience
- Demonstrated experience performing analysis and data acquisition with complex laboratory equipment including HPLC and LC/MSMS
- Knowledge of and the ability to learn analysis and data acquisition on additional laboratory equipment including ICP/MS, AAS, and ELISA
- Strong proficiency in analytical methods development and troubleshooting
- Demonstrated laboratory technical skills and ability to process human biological samples
- Ability to evaluate, select, and apply analytical skills to laboratory problems
- Demonstrated skill and experience coordinating complex study protocols
- Ability to perform in a fast-paced demanding work environment
- Must be able to prioritize multiple, competing assignments
- Ability to provide technical leadership and manage a project to completion
- Demonstrated ability to communicate technical data and results via technical reports, oral presentations, scientific writings
- Proficient in Microsoft Office

- Must maintain regular and acceptable attendance level as determined by the Company
- Laboratory Requirements include the ability to utilize full hand function to include grasping and feeling is required
- Standing/walking; climbing/stooping/kneeling; lifting/pulling/pushing: 20 lbs. or greater is required
