American IndianCommunity Liaison and Program Specialist
A position is available for an American Indian School Community Liaison. Mankato Area Public School supports programming for Native students. We aspire to engage students in cultural activities and mentorship by providing Community Liaison and grant-specific programming throughout the school year and in the summer when needed. This is a grant-funded, part-time position with funding secured through AIA on an annual basis.
Job Summary:
To serve as a liaison between families and the school sites to help develop and sustain a trusting and supportive relationship that will benefit students, families, and the district. Create cultural and mentorship programming for Native Mankato Area Public School students and families. The Community Liaison and Program Specialist will work closely with the AIPAC, Student Support Coordinator. This position will manage aspects of American Indian programming, including:
  • Cultural activities and mentoring opportunities for students.
  • Collaborating with AIPAC, MDE American Indian Education, and MAPS staff on various activities and grant initiatives.

Responsibilities:
  • Develop, plan, and manage cultural activities, and mentorship for students.
  • Coordinate materials ordering, communication, transportation, meeting spaces, and resources for activities.
  • Facilitate students' empowerment, social, racial, academic, and identity development through events and activities.
  • Hire activity leaders.
  • Attend activity sessions and supervise.
  • Supervise and communicate events and activities with the American Indian Program Assistant.
  • Collaborate with staff to provide culturally relevant experiential learning opportunities and college or career pathway opportunities in and out of the classroom.
  • Facilitate communication between the AIPAC, students, parents, and school staff to ensure student achievement.
  • Act as a consultant to the AIPAC, teachers, administrators, and other staff regarding the culture, heritage, and background of students and families.
  • Serve as a bridge between the schools and families and advocate for educational equity for all students and families.
  • Work with building principals, teachers, and other support staff to benefit American Indian students.
  • Arrange tutoring services or provide tutoring to American Indian students.
  • Establish and develop strong community relationships (colleges and universities, religious, social services) to cultivate the possibilities of college from elementary to high school, engage in service-learning, and provide our students and families with community resources.
  • Work collaboratively with the Minnesota Department of Education American Indian Education Department on various grant initiative reporting or tracking.
  • Other duties as assigned to support AIPAC and/or grant-based programming initiatives.

Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of American Indian culture, Dakota, and/or Ojibwe language or culture preferred
  • High school diploma or GED A two-year college degree is preferred
  • Experience working with children
  • Strong organizational skills and time management
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities
  • Commitment to Mankato Area Public School's vision mission and values.

Working Conditions:
Schedule: Part-time up to 25 hours a week
Start Date: December 1, 2023
Rate of pay: $25.72 per hour
