Job description

The Alcohol Policy Legal Epidemiology Research Intern performs vital services and administrative duties for WisAPP. Working under the direction of the WisAPP staff, this individual performs legal research and collects information on Alcohol Policy issues to help create tools for prevention of excessive alcohol use from a population heath/community safety perspective, with a focus on the impact of alcohol policies on health in Wisconsin. The WisAPP project specialist will help to develop a database of municipal alcohol regulations and practices in Wisconsin and may draft written content such as policy summaries or memoranda for use in alcohol prevention efforts.

This individual must be able to work independently and collaboratively, manage their time effectively and work with a wide range of professionals and officials from diverse disciplinary backgrounds and geographic areas, including law enforcement, municipal attorneys, elected officials, municipal administrative staff, university staff, and public health specialists. This position will review and collect municipal ordinances, resolutions, and guidance, will help organize and facilitate key stakeholder interviews, and will help collect and code verbal and written information on alcohol prevention efforts, local alcohol issues, and alcohol enforcement in Wisconsin.

The position may require some occasional travel within Wisconsin to Milwaukee. 

Primary Functions

  1. Conduct legal research on Wisconsin alcohol policies as directed.
  2. Conduct research on and analyze the implementation of alcohol regulation and related law enforcement policies as requested.
  3. Assist with field and/or policy research regarding municipal alcohol policies, issues and attitudes related to alcohol beverages, and enforcement practices.
  4. Assist with various aspects of key informant interviews such as subject recruitment, correspondence with subjects and potential subjects, organization, logistics, and recording, and transcribing key informant interviews.
  5. Code results from key informant interviews
  6. Enter collected information into a database and review information for accuracy.
  7. A valid driver’ license is required as some travel will be necessary to Milwaukee.

 

Knowledge – Skills – Abilities

  • Knowledge of Wisconsin state, municipal, and/or public health law, experience reading and interpreting Wisconsin statutes or local ordinances, and ability to read and understand statutes, ordinances, and regulations
  • An interest in participating in public health efforts to prevent or reduce excessive drinking.
  • Experience with Excel, Microsoft Office, and remote working software such as Teams and Zoom.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy when working with data.
  • Effective communication skills with diverse audiences is essential.
  • Writing proficiency for both general and professional audiences.
