Job description

Position Summary

This position is a member of the Palm Springs International Airport and performs a full range of duties in operations of the Airport Control Center and is responsible for a variety of complex Airport Control Center functions including; security, emergency, and record systems.

Examples of Essential and General Responsibilities

Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Operate a variety of complex Airport Control Center equipment including radio/telephone consoles, paging stations, video surveillance equipment, various computer equipment, and security systems.
  • Provide emergency and routine control, monitoring, and dispatch functions and activities of the Airport Control Center.
  • Compose, maintain, and review a variety of reports, records, and logs including aircraft incident/accident reports, maintenance work orders and airfield condition reports.
  • Operate a variety of airport security and operations equipment including the Airport Badging system and equipment, security access control system (SACS), and the closed-circuit television system.
  • Distribute and deactivate badges and PIN numbers; issue stop sheets, conduct cargo inspections.
  • Inform employees and appropriate personnel of the use and restrictions of the systems.
  • Determine the operating status of equipment.
  • Conduct routine inspections of landside, airside, and terminal facilities and surrounding areas.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable rules and regulations.
  • Issue Notices to Airmen (NOTAMS) as appropriate.
  • Respond to emergency situations; initiate airport emergency operations and response; operate emergency equipment.
  • Coordinate emergency services and communications.
  • Respond to questions and inquiries.
  • Provide staff assistance to Airport Operations Managers and Supervisors.
  • Perform operations duties in support of the Department of Aviation.
  • To serve as the Airport’s central point of contact for airport tenants and outside agencies.
  • Represent the Department of Aviation to other divisions, departments, and outside agencies.
  • Provide escort services and guided tours as required.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

Minimum and Preferred Requirements

(One year of work experience is the equivalent of 12 months of full-time work. "Full-time work" means at least 36 hours of work over a period of one week or 1,872 hours of work over a period of at least 12 months.) Qualifications noted as "desirable" are not included as part of the minimum requirements.

Experience:
  • Two (2) years of Aviation (Airport or Airline) operations experience is required.
  • Experience or exposure to communication center, aviation security, emergency management/response, compliance, or maintenance of airside facilities is preferred.
Training:
  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Additional specialized training in Airport Operations, communications, or a related field is preferred.
  • A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in Airport Administration/Operations, Aviation Management/Administration, Air Traffic Control, or related field or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities is preferred and may be substituted for the two (2) years of work experience.
License or Certificates:
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, and maintain a valid California driver license with a satisfactory driving record is required.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid C.P.R. Certificate is required.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a Security Identification Display Area (SIDA) Badge, which is approved through the Federal Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is required.
  • Possession of Airport Certified Employee (ACE) credential is preferred.
Special Requirements:
  • Incumbents are enrolled in the California Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV) Pull Notice Program. The DMV Pull Notice Program provides information on the incumbent's driving record and driving record status on a periodic basis to the City.
  • Must be willing and able to work various hours including mornings, evenings, weekends and holidays.
  • Incumbent must successfully complete, or have completed, the necessary pre-employment/placement background investigation, physical, and drug screen.

Environmental Conditions:
This position works in a Communications Center environment, airport environment with exposure to computer screens, heat, noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, gases, and potentially dangerous situations.
Physical Conditions:
Essential and marginal functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for standing, walking and sitting for prolonged periods; talk and/or hear, in person and by telephone; use hands to finger, handle, feel, or operate standard computer and operations equipment; specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus; specific hearing abilities required by this job include the ability to identify and make distinctions in sound, ability to exert light to moderate physical effort which may include climbing, bending, kneeling, reaching, lifting and carrying.
