SUMMARY
La Unión del Pueblo Entero, LUPE is a social justice, community-building, membership organization, founded by Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta. LUPE provides free and culturally- responsive education programs to satisfy the needs of the Spanish-speaking community of the Rio Grande Valley. The education program is aimed to help LUPE members gain a basic understanding of the English language and prepare them for their citizenship test.
LUPE is seeking an energetic, eloquent, and compassionate ESL and Citizenship teacher. The teacher will instruct LUPE’s ESL and Citizenship curriculum to adult students from different social backgrounds. The teacher responds directly to the Director of Education. This is a part time position and includes weekday evenings.
LUPE has a sister organization, LUPE Votes, a separate, but related, nonprofit organization that is exempt from federal income tax under section 501(c)(4) of the Internal Revenue Code. Although LUPE and LUPE Votes share a common goal of supporting immigrants and low-income people in Rio Grande Valley, and nationally, they are separate organizations with their own board of directors and a set of employees at the two organizations, including the person filling this position, shares their time between the two organizations. This has no effect on salary or benefits.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
● Provide students with appropriate distance, virtual, or face to face learning in the subjects of English as a Second Language/U.S. Citizenship.
● Implement instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials as indicated by the course curriculum.
● Conduct mock interviews with students and provide them with feedback on all aspects measured in the citizenship interview
● Become familiar with the pedagogic content to be taught.
● Create a welcoming and safe classroom environment conducive to learning.
● Aid in registration process and promotion of classes.
● Keep communication with students via phone, text or email.
● Attend and participate in program meetings with other instructors and program coordinator.
● Administer in-person placement assessment at the beginning of each course cycle.
● Conduct ongoing assessment of student achievement through formal and informal testing as indicated by the course curriculum.
● Provide ongoing feedback of student achievement through formal and informal methods on mastery of lessons as per established program grading procedures.
● Keep track of student attendance and participation for every class meeting.
● Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents required.
● Maintain an organized work environment after each session.
● Perform other related duties such as assigned.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Associate’s degree in related field preferred; high school diploma with six to twelve months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
- Familiarity, commitment, and sensitivity to Movement principals and community issues.
- Strong proficiency in English and Spanish.
- Experience working with adult students from a variety of backgrounds, including those with limited formal education and/or literacy skills, strongly preferred.
- General knowledge of curriculum and instruction.
- A team player with the ability to work with diverse populations and socio-economic groups.
- Deep understanding of the English language and general understanding of language teaching, preferred.
- Proficiency with computers, including MS PowerPoint, Excel and Google Suite.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Excellent verbal and written communication skills in both English and Spanish.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
