Job Description

ADU Architectural Designer (Contractor)
Who are we?
We’re a rapidly growing team in the Silicon Valley construction space located in Campbell, California. We have a 30-year legacy in construction and our sole focus is on making a positive impact on the California housing crisis. At Acton, we design, navigate, and build accessory dwelling units (ADUs), also known as backyard homes. These ADUs help create accessible housing options for thousands of homeowners across the Bay Area, while positively impacting people’s lives.
Ultimately, we strive to infuse Silicon Valley culture into a traditional industry. We believe in these fundamental truths:
We innovate.
We work together.
We care about people.
Who are you?
Growing up you’ve always had an instinct for architecture and now as a professional, your finger is on the pulse of industry trends. Architecture. Innovation. Efficiency. People. The art and science of building design, construction, and helping people. These are your mantras. You’re creative, but understand the freedom of working within structure. You’re a great listener and eager to work with city planning and building departments--because each time you get better at it and continually make friendly connections.
The role!
As an Acton ADU Architectural Designer, you’ll be part of a collaborative team of designers, architects, ADU evangelists, and building professionals. You’ll have a steady flow of projects and be responsible for the creation of floor plans and architectural drawings that meet our client’s motivations, needs, and budget expectations; as well as delight the people we work with.
In addition to following the construction of the project, the Project Designer collaborates with the design department to find great design solutions for real-world building challenges.
You’ll get to show your skills and make a huge impact at one of the fastest-growing design-build teams in Silicon Valley.
Responsibilities:
  • Advise on interior and exterior design factors such as space planning and how that relates to city regulations.
  • Develop graphic sketches to convey design intent.
  • Create design presentations.
  • Design for all phases from schematic design through the end of Design Development, Construction Documents/ Building permit submittal, and Construction Administration.
  • Develop complete detailed construction plans (ensuring adherence to established specifications, standards, and codes per jurisdiction) for permit submittal, and the ability to respond to comments.
  • Review engineering and other consultant drawings to ensure they comply with design intention.
  • Ensure designs adhere to given budgets and schedules and maintain project documentation.
  • Maintain positive working relationships with customers, outside consultants, technical, and Acton staff.

Key Skills:
  • Exemplary in residential building codes, understanding different product types and implementing codes to determine building construction. ADU experience is a plus.
  • Strong skills in the production of construction drawings, start to finish required.
  • Strong skills and talent in Revit/BIM, Bluebeam and Adobe Design Suite.
  • Experience working in construction phases of projects.
  • Self-motivated; ability to work independently and in a team environment to coordinate with other design professionals.
  • Excellent problem solver and independent thinker with good listening skills and strong follow-through.
  • Excellent graphic, communication, organizational, and collaborative skills.
  • Bachelor of Architecture or equivalent experience.
  • Proficiency in: Google Drive, MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

About Acton ADU:

Stan Acton has been a builder since he was 10 years old. It began the day he broke his father’s wooden mallet. The mallet had been crafted by Stan’s father when he was a kid, on his own father’s Shopsmith lathe. Stan was devastated and rushed to grab a piece of firewood. He carefully took the wood, placed it on his father’s Shopsmith--and in that moment, his passion for carpentry was born.Today Acton Construction is a Design-Build company with enthusiasm for crafting beautiful homes that are functional, lasting, and charming. Acton Construction thrives through established processes and utilizing expertise to provide customers with certainty, transparency, and value--always. This is Acton’s legacy.
