The College of Health is seeking an Associate Dean for Student Services and Well-Being. This is a full-time, 1.00 FTE, 12-month, professional faculty position.
The Associate Dean for Student Services and Well-Being ( ADSSW) reports directly to the dean of the College of Health ( COH) and will be a member of the COH executive leadership team. (As of July 1, 2023, the College of Public Health and Human Sciences will be renamed to the College of Health.) The ADSSW will work closely with all associate deans, school heads, academic and professional faculty, and staff to facilitate and enrich all aspects of the undergraduate and graduate student experience, including (1) recruitment, enrollment, and retention, (2) academic success, (3) emotional well-being, (4) sense of community and belonging, and (5) transition to meaningful further studies and/or employment.
The ADSSW will lead efforts related to both undergraduate and graduate students. They will oversee a team that will include (1) recruitment, enrollment, and retention personnel, (2) student advisors, (3) individuals focused on employer engagement and career development, and (4) a new clinical mental health expert position that the ADSSW will be instrumental in developing.
A key focus of the ADSSW will be to build a culture of belonging, warmth, balance, and emotional support. The ADSSW will pay special attention to achieving key metrics related to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging in all areas.

Key Responsibilities
80% - Leadership & Administrative Oversight of Student Services and Well-Being:
  • Provide leadership and administrative oversight for student services, well-being, and success for both undergraduate and graduate students. This includes recruitment, enrollment, and retention; student advising and academic success; building a community and culture of well-being, balance, and support; career and professional development; and transitions to further study and/or meaningful employment.
  • Plan, implement, and evaluate short- and long-range strategies, goals, and objectives for recruitment, enrollment, and retention.
  • Develop and execute a plan to formally assess over time key outcomes such as student learning, engagement, emotional well-being, belonging, and career readiness.
  • Develop programs and activities that enable a diverse population of prospective students to discover various opportunities in the college. Actively engage with student groups to raise awareness of opportunities in the college's disciplines. Develop and maintain outreach-related informational and recruiting materials.
  • Assume responsibility for developing, in partnership with college leadership, a staffing structure and funding plan for the addition of an embedded mental and/or emotional health professional reporting to the ADSSW. This will include determining the most critical specific duties of this individual, drafting the position description, recruiting, and retaining the individual, integrating them into the full team reporting to the ADSSW, and collaborating with campus (e.g., CAPS, Student Health Services) or external partners to promote health and well-being of the COH.
  • Enrich and diversify the student experience by enhancing effective teaching-learning environments and developing growth opportunities inside and outside the classroom.
  • Serve as College Hearing Officer in academic misconduct cases. Represent the college in university-wide initiatives related to student services. Meaningfully collaborate with other colleges and administrative units to advance student services, recruitment, engagement, well-being, and/or success in a mutually beneficial way.
  • Partner with the Associate Dean for Academic and Faculty Affairs on initiatives related to promoting and supporting academic programs and faculty.
  • Partner with the Associate Dean for Academic and Faculty Affairs and School Heads and faculty on initiatives related to promoting and supporting the success of Graduate Teaching and Research Assistants.
  • Partner with the Associate Dean for Research on initiatives related to student research activities.
  • Partner with the Associate Dean for Extension and Engagement on initiatives related to increased student involvement in community outreach and Extension opportunities.
  • Administer academic policies and procedures in accordance with university standards.
  • Lead the college's undergraduate and graduate scholarship application and award process.
  • Participate in national conversations about trends and best practices in student services, well-being, and success.

15% - Leadership & Supervision:
  • Provide leadership, supervision and oversight for faculty and staff reporting to the ADSSW, which includes planning, assigning, and reviewing work, hiring and termination, responding to grievances, providing feedback, professional development and completing performance evaluations.
  • Strategically lead the student services and well-being endeavors in our college, envisioning and creating an optimized organizational structure. The current Office of Student Success is generally comprised of a head advisor up to 10 academic advisors, and support staff.

5% - Professional Development & Other Duties as Assigned
  • Complete meaningful professional development related to the duties of this position.
What You Will Need
  • PhD or terminal degree in health or related discipline.
  • Five or more years of accomplishments in higher education, which includes teaching, student development and building a culture of emotional support, wellness, and/or mentorship.
  • Two or more years of leadership experience involving factors such as strategy, resource decision making, and personnel management.
  • A demonstrable record of holding the interpersonal skills necessary to interact and partner effectively with students, faculty, staff, central administration, alumni, the public, and professional societies.
  • A demonstrable record of ability to maintain confidentiality, discretion, and professionalism.
  • A demonstrable record of promoting and enhancing diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.
What We Would Like You to Have
  • A degree in one of the following specific areas represented by our college: public health, nutrition, human development and family science, kinesiology/exercise and sports science.
  • Professional experience related to mental, emotional, and/or behavioral health and well-being, or training in a related field (e.g., social work, counseling, health promotion/health behavior), or experience developing programs to promote well-being for students.
  • Five or more years of experience in a role that was responsive to key issues in student services such as handling academic misconduct cases and administering academic policies and procedures in accordance with university standards.
  • Experience with higher education systems and processes that involve duties related to this position, such as undergraduate and/or graduate student recruitment, enrollment, and retention; marketing; student resources; and/or career services.
  • Experience teaching in higher education.
