Position Summary:
The Jazz Band Conductor is responsible for coordinating the Terra State Jazz Band including recruiting members, selecting music, conducting rehearsals, identifying instrument needs, and other duties related to the Band. The Conductor will also be part of the Ensemble Committee which plans and produces all concerts and events within the Terra Music Department.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Utilizing knowledge of conducting techniques and music theory, guides the Terra State Jazz Band in weekly rehearsals to achieve desired musical effects such as tonal and harmonic balance, dynamics, rhythm, tempo, and shading.
Utilizing teaching techniques and experience, creates learning outcomes and academic studies to foster musical growth for students in Jazz Performance. Keeps grade records in CANVAS and other programs to measure student success.
Maintains Jazz music library and keeps records of ensemble membership.
Remains current with subject matter and instructional methodology as it relates to teaching college-level jazz performance classes.
Employs appropriate assessment techniques to measure student performance in achieving course goals and objectives.
Communicates progress in the course to students in a timely manner.
Determines and submits students' grades in accordance with established College policies and procedures.
Completes other duties as assigned.
Program Area Responsibilities:
Works with other Music Ensemble Instructors and the director to recommend dates and format for annual department concert series. Coordinates Jazz Band participation in concerts and conducts several performances per year.
Maintains working relationships with area high school Jazz Band Directors and encourages performance opportunities.
With other Ensemble Instructors, participates in department fund-raising and community outreach activities to support and promote the Terra Music Program.
Selects music for the concert performances, in collaboration with the other Music Ensemble Instructors and the music director, to suit performance requirements, accommodate talent and ability of the group, and support the music program objectives.
Supports the mission of the program, division, and College.

Education and Work Experience:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Music with a jazz emphasis preferred, or professional/graduate experience in the field.
- Minimum of two years teaching experience required, preferably at the college level.
