Job description

The Center for Judaic Studies encourages cultural understanding through interdisciplinary studies and research in Jewish languages, philosophy, religion, history, literature, and film. CJS offers academic studies at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Our faculty and staff feature top-tier teachers, authors, and professionals committed to fostering global Jewish culture in Denver and throughout Colorado. Beyond campus, we engage lifelong learners through diverse programming and social action initiatives. CJS serves as the home for the Holocaust Awareness Institutes Survival & Witness platform, the premier educational resource supporting the State of Colorados mandate for Holocaust and genocide education in public schools.
Position Summary
The Center for Judaic Studies seeks an adjunct instructor to teach one course in Spring Quarter 2024 on Holocaust history, to be cross-listed with the Department of History. The course should focus on the role played by Nazi collaborator regimes (e.g., Hungary, Romania, Vichy France) in perpetrating genocide in Europe and the global repercussions of WWII across colonial possessions.
Essential Functions

  • Teach an in person course with bi-weekly meeting times
  • Assign and grade level-relevant student work
  • Hold/maintain office hours

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Demonstrated experience teaching at college-level
  • Possess foreign language abilities relevant to guiding research in primary materials
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Required Qualifications

  • PhD in History or a relevant field
  • 3 yrs of experience teaching at college level
  • Expertise in using primary sources (e.g., through publications and/or institutional museum or foundation affiliations)
  • Foreign language skills relevant to Holocaust scholarship

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced language skills (especially French)
  • Experience using oral testimony archives

Work Schedule
Varies-in person coursework in spring quarter 2024 with 2 meeting times per week.
While the University's administrative offices are open Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm, faculty schedules vary from term to term and are based on courses taught, service commitments, and research agendas. The University's academic calendars are posted on the registrar's website (the law school is on a semester system and has a different academic calendar).

Course Rate
The 2024 adjunct rate is $4,772 per four credit course.
The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The University may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidates sex or any other protected status.
