Job Description
The Accountant for Grants and General Ledger is an integral part of the University's accounting department, performing complex accounting functions. The accountant is involved in a variety of accounting, tax and account reconciliation processes as well as the University's annual financial audits.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Analyze and prepare entries as needed for grant accounting
  • Prepare schedules for grant draws from all sponsors
  • Prepare quarterly grant financial statements for project directors
  • Prepare and submit the HERD (Higher Education Research & Development) survey annually
  • Liaise with Sponsored Projects Administration regarding University's grants
  • Assist the Controller in the generation of the financial statements
  • Assist the Controller in the prevention of inaccuracies in financial statements by setting up internal control systems and adopting proper policies for financial reporting
  • Review financial data periodically to ensure accuracy and completeness of the data.
  • Perform internal audit duties as assigned
  • Assist in the University's monthly and yearly closings
  • Assist in special projects as needed by the Controller and Associate Controller
  • Prepare audit schedules, assist the auditors in their inquiries, and perform other audit duties as assigned
  • Answer questions and solve problems presented by University staff as necessary
  • Help develop and revise accounting policies and procedures
  • Help train staff on accounting policies and procedures
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

Education/Experience:
Bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university in accounting; one to three years related experience and/or training; experience in grant accounting is a plus. Relevant experience will be considered in lieu of degree requirement.
Language Ability:
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public as this position frequently communicates complex information. Ability to train and monitor others' performance. Ability to present, resolve conflicts and address delicate situations. Ability to motivate and persuade others.
Math Ability:
Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
Reasoning Ability:
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Computer Skills:
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of the Microsoft Office Suite, as well as systems experience in accounting environment as well as advanced knowledge in working with spreadsheets such as Microsoft Excel. Banner knowledge is a plus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to work near moving mechanical parts (fax machine, printers) and risk of electrical shock.

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to stand and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to walk; climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
Other Demands:
Will have frequent contact with others outside of workgroup, both inside and outside the university. Results have major implications on the management and operations of an area within a department.

Wage Range: $18.57 to $21.50 per hour with generous benefits
