Job Description:
The Academic Tutor provides support to elementary, middle, and high school students who struggle in one or more subject areas (ESL, math, science, English, social studies, reading) during assigned hours.
Illustrative Duties:
- Perform front desk activities, including scheduling, record-keeping, and tutoring-coordination
- To develop a full working knowledge of academic skills development, materials and strategies
- Participate in outreach activities, e.g. presenting information regarding study skills and academic support available from STEM UP to school campuses, recreation centers, or other related entities
- Offer assistance with developing study strategies
- Assess the tutee’s progress throughout the tutoring sessions
- Participate in tutor training and development sessions

- Demonstrate knowledge and competence in the subject matter
- Exhibit patience and positive attitudes in establishing an encouraging learning environment
- Exhibit the ability to work with students one-on-one and in small groups
- Work comfortably with students from diverse backgrounds
- Possess good organizational skills and complete paperwork in a timely manner
- Highly organized with the ability to implement systems and follow-up processes
- Use independent judgment and produce high quality work within time constraints
- Excellent communication and writing skills
- Ability to grasp future trends in digital technologies and act proactively
- Strong orientation to detail and process excellence
- High customer service attitude
- Must have outstanding interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written
- Strong MS Office skills with depth of knowledge in Excel
- Strong planning, execution and organizational skills with a proactive attitude that gets things done
Educational Requirements:
- High School Diploma required; Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, marketing, or a related field a plus
- Teacher certification a plus
Other Requirements:
- Bilingual a plus
