Job Summary

Is responsible for providing an innovative and holistic approach to supporting student success for underrepresented minorities, STEM students, participants of Title V/TRIO SSS programs, first generation students, and/or at-risk students; coaches and provides support for student success by strategically contacting students during the first year at crucial times; provides learning opportunities focused on student success skills such as digital literacy, growth mindset, interdependence and soft skills; connects students to critical Support Services; provides guidance on academic career and university transfer options leading first year students toward their career goals; and serves all students as a TRUE Learning Community by promoting student success through student learning, student development, and student retention.

This position may be dependent upon grant funding depending on assigned area.

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Maintains and organizes detailed set of records for assigned caseload of students wthin assigned area of interest or program; pro-actively communicates with assigned students (both individually and in groups) to maximize enrollment, persistence, course success and retention; implements Academic Success program and resource materials for first year students that promote learning and fulfill the program objectives; and maintains thorough documentation of all project activities and interactions with students.
  • Conducts comprehensive intake and assessment as required by assigned programs.
  • Assists students with residency corrections, registration and financial appeals, FAFSA/Scholarship applications, student payment plan process, and navigating McCAC Student Portal/Blackboard Virtual Classroom/Office 365 online platform.
  • Assists students with communicating with their professors and connecting with on- and off-campus resources such as tutoring, academic coaching, TRIO, student engagement, housing, job experience/internships, Bookstore orders, free student mental services, CART bus system, and equipment loan program.
  • Assists academic faculty in their areas of interest to navigate complex registration processes for their cohort programs.
  • Advises students regarding their academic and career goals; may create a Master Academic Plan (MAP) for student in assigned areas; and helps students to develop habits, skills, and behaviors that contribute to success in College including self-regulation and self-efficacy.
  • Monitors progress of students in case load; schedules meetings; responds to students’ questions, concerns, and needs via email, text, virtual meetings, and face-to-face; uses the early alert process to identify and follow up with at risk students in College Foundation courses (English, Reading and Math); reaches out to students who have been referred by faculty; puts in place appropriate interventions for success; and coordinates individualized tutoring services such as for SSS TRIO Program; researches and recommends resolutions for technically difficult and complex student concerns; analyzes confidential student information; identifies issues and discrepancies; and formulates plans to support student success.
  • Participates in various campus activities to raise awareness of students regarding resources available to them; engages assigned students in learning, College navigation, and life support activities; and refers students to all service resources necessary for their success.
  • Collaborates with student affairs, learning support, instructional personnel and other College constituents to create, modify, and support student success efforts; may initiate and maintain strategic partnerships with various divisions and universities.
  • Operates multiple College systems to retrieve, communicate and submit information/data (Blackboard, NEXUS, Office 365, etc.); collects evidence and evaluates student and academic services operations and processes; assists in designing metrics to measure quality of services; recommends improvements and modifications; and summarizes findings and prepares related reports.
  • Actively participates in professional learning opportunities focused on equity and inclusion, learning support, and online learning.
  • Interprets, applies, and abides by the Federal education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and parental confidentiality issues.
  • Conducts transfer workshops and classroom presentations; provides workshops on other topics as assigned.
  • Participates in committee assignments and in the recruitment and retention of students.
  • Performs other duties commensurate with functions and level of position or as assigned.
  • Qualifications

    EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree in specified field related to the assigned area; Master’s Degree in Education, Counseling or a related field desired.
    EXPERIENCE: One (1) year of related experience
    SPECIAL POSITION CONDITIONS: Works a flexible schedule as needed to meet needs of students. Possession of a valid State of Arizona Class D Driver's License is required. Bilingual Spanish/English desired.
    Travel in and out of state is required with students and for professors training. Planning and implementation of the Summer Bridge program and peer mentor selection process is required annually.
    Background Verification: As a condition of employment, all candidates accepting an offer of employment for a full-time, part- time, temporary, student worker, or volunteer position, will be required to undergo a Background Verification. Employment with Central Arizona College is contingent upon the successful completion of the background verification. The level the background verification for this position is: Executive level.

    Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Knowledge of methods and techniques of learning and/or teaching students and staff.
  • Knowledge of the methods and practices used in conducting research, in the use of the internet as a tool, and in report preparation.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices in a variety of teaching techniques and the use of technology in instruction
  • Knowledge of techniques and methodologies of student assessment.
  • Knowledge of developing instructional programs, planning, evaluation, and review.
  • Skill in using Microsoft Office products, electronic mail system, and student database systems.
  • Skill in operating a variety of multimedia equipment, computer systems, hardware, and relevant software applications.
  • Skill in communicating.
  • Skill in interacting with staff, community leaders, faculty, students, and the public.
  • Skill in working with a diverse multi-ethnic, multi-cultural population.
  • Ability to produce new, imaginative, or innovative solutions different from traditional approaches.
  • PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
    The work is sedentary work. The employee is occasionally required to exert up to 10 pounds of force to move objects. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required:hearing, mental acuity, repetitive motion, speaking, talking, and visual acuity in data/operating equipment.

    WORKING CONDITIONS:
    Work is performed in a relatively safe, secure, and stable work environment. Job is performed in general office or comparable working area with occasional distractions such as noise and interruptions or in congested work areas with exposure to some disagreeable elements.
