Purpose
The primary purpose of an Academic Consultant in Secondary Math is to support and enhance mathematics education by providing expertise, guidance, and resources to teachers, administrators, and other stakeholders. This includes assisting in curriculum development, offering professional learning opportunities, analyzing data to inform instructional practices, and promoting continuous improvement in mathematics teaching and learning.
Performance Responsibilities
The role of Academic Consultant supporting Secondary Math programs encompasses orienting new staff, coaching teachers, and consulting administrators. Consultants collaborate with teachers to develop and refine curriculum, while also assisting in the analysis of data for systematic improvement tailored to instructional needs. Consultants promote effective math teaching practices through professional learning opportunities and collaborative planning sessions with math teachers, ensuring alignment with curriculum frameworks and Idaho Content Standards.
Essential Duties
- Collaborate with teachers to develop and refine curriculum documents that include curriculum guides, proficiency scales, and aligned assessments.
- Provide guidance and support to teachers in implementing effective math teaching practices and pedagogical approaches in Secondary Mathematics classrooms.
- Foster a collaborative professional learning community among math teachers through workshops, coaching cycles, book studies, and other professional learning activities.
- Provide regular support for teachers and administrators on curricular issues that include planning, assessing, grading, and reporting.
- Analyze student achievement data and assessment results to identify areas for improvement and develop targeted intervention strategies.
- Develop and lead professional learning for Secondary Mathematics teachers to enhance their instructional strategies, content knowledge, and curricular knowledge
- Stay abreast of current research, trends, and developments in Secondary Mathematics education to inform instructional practices and professional development initiatives.
- Assist in the selection and adoption of instructional materials, resources, and technology tools to enhance mathematics instruction and student engagement.
- Participate in school-wide and/or district-level committees and initiatives aimed at improving mathematics instruction, curriculum coherence, and student achievement.
- Utilizes efficient file management and document management systems to organize, store, and retrieve curriculum materials, instructional resources, assessment data, and other relevant documents related to Secondary Mathematics education.
- Complete projects, tasks, and other duties as assigned by the Math Curriculum Coordinator and Director of Curriculum & Instruction
- Holds a current Idaho Teaching Credential.
- Five years teaching experience in Secondary Mathematics, preferably at the high school level.
- Demonstrated expertise in instructional design, curriculum development, and assessment practices in Secondary Mathematics.
- Strong understanding of Idaho Content Standards in Math, Idaho Math Framework, and the Effective Math Teaching Practices (NCTM).
- Solid organizational skills, including the ability to manage multiple tasks, prioritize responsibilities, and meet deadlines effectively in a fast-paced educational environment.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office products, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, with the ability to create coherent and professional documents, presentations, and data analysis reports for diverse stakeholders in Secondary Mathematics education.
- Proven ability to lead professional learning sessions and facilitate collaborative curriculum development with teachers.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to establish rapport and work effectively with educators, administrators, and stakeholders.
- Analytical and data-driven mindset, with the ability to interpret student achievement data and assessment results to inform instructional decision-making.
- Commitment to ongoing professional growth and development in the field of mathematics education.
- Leadership qualities, including the ability to motivate and inspire others, promote a culture of continuous improvement, and advocate for equity and access in mathematics education.
